Under supervision, performs skilled maintenance carpentry and performs related work as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Erects, maintains, and repairs various types of buildings, sheds, scaffolds, forms, frames, fences, and other structures; makes cabinets, counters, lockers, shelves, doors, and window frames; keeps tools, materials, and equipment in good condition; makes rough sketches and estimates the cost of new structures and repair work; advises in the selection of building materials; requisitions and stores building materials and supplies; keeps simple records and makes reports; consults with other trades persons; and instructs and leads unskilled assistants.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Either completion of a recognized apprenticeship in carpentry, or graduation from a recognized trade school;
WITH three years of experience as a journey-level carpenter;
AND possession of a valid California driver's license and have and maintain an insurable driving record. Equivalent combinations of education, training and experience will be considered.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
KNOWLEDGE OF: principles, methods, tools, and equipment used in carpentry; building codes; rough and finish carpentry; and the use and care of hand and power tools used in carpentry.
SKILL IN: preparing rough sketches of work and estimates of materials and labor; reading blueprints, plans, and specifications; interpreting specifications; performing all phases of carpentry relevant to renovation, rehabilitation, and modernization of Authority structures; identifying and using the tools of the trade; and recognizing lumber types and grades.
ABILITY TO: perform work that requires some physical strength and agility, including the ability to sit three to four hours, to stand and walk five to six hours, to bend three to four hours, to crawl one to two hours, to reach, crouch, kneel, and balance for three to four hours, to lift up to 100 pounds unassisted; and other abilities as specified in the State of California Division of Industrial Accidents form RB-91 for this classification. Also requires the ability to follow oral and written directions; keep simple records and make reports; instruct and lead unskilled assistants; and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing (or with audio and visual capacities).
BILINGUAL SKILLS: Candidates with bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, mandarin and/or Vietnamese are encouraged to apply.

Candidates who compete successfully in this examination will have their names placed on a List of Qualifiers. An appointment will be made from the List. For some positions, an experience/training rating and/or written evaluation of candidates will be used in lieu of the oral examination. The names of the highest-ranking candidates will be placed on the List of Qualifiers, and the final selection will be made from this List. College degrees or units required for the position will be verified prior to final appointment. If this information cannot be verified for a candidate, the candidate's name will not be placed on the List of Qualifiers. All appointments are subject to the approval of the Executive Director. All prospective employees must pass a physical examination and drug screening by an Authority-designated physician. A pre-employment criminal history background check will also be conducted for all positions. For positions requiring use of an Authority vehicle, candidates' driving records will be checked prior to appointment. To be eligible for appointment, each candidate must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and a driving record acceptable to the Authority's insurer. All prospective employees must also provide proof of American citizenship, or legal resident status and the legal right to work in the United States. Prior to becoming permanent, new employees must successfully pass a probationary period. Union dues and initiation fees, or service fees equal to the amount of monthly union dues are required of employees who are in positions represented by a collective bargaining agent.

SICK LEAVE is accrued at the rate of one day per month.
VACATION LEAVE for new employees is accrued at the rate of 10 days each year.
There are also fourteen (14) paid holidays each year.
RETIREMENT - The Authority is a member of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS), and members pay 6.25% of gross salary towards PERS. The Authority also participates in Social Security.
HEALTH, DENTAL, AND VISION INSURANCE is available. GROUP LIFE INSURANCE is fully paid by the Authority.
Management, supervisory, professional and confidential employees are also entitled to a management benefit package allowance and five days of administrative leave per year.
