Senior UNIX System Administrator for Cassandra

As a Senior UNIX System Administrator, you will be responsible for assisting with design, administration, monitoring, optimizing performance, and troubleshooting of an Apache Cassandra database environment for our customer, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The Cassandra/DataStax cluster environment consists of multiple Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers and is considered “mission critical” and a high visibility element within USPTO’s expanding IT services portfolio. This is a full-time position and work location will be in Alexandria, VA.

Support for administration, troubleshooting, configuration, system security, installation, deployment, maintenance, and high availability design

Ensures effective security, operation and peak performance of Cassandra/DataStax environments

Responsible for development, maintenance and testing of contingency plans

Assisting with hardware maintenance and lifecycle planning for the software, hardware and networking assets affecting the Cassandra/DataStax environment

Working closely with development teams to design, implement and support USPTO’s data storage and reporting systems

Participates in the setting of objectives, strategies, plans, programs, performance standards/measures and procedures, as a member of the IT Management team

Development of customer support processes, technical planning, and work coordination

Provide day-to-day operational support including responding to incidents, troubleshooting, and executing corrective action

Required Knowledge and Skills:
Senior UNIX System Administrator with minimum 5 years of experience in administration and support

Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Outstanding communications and organization skills

Ability and desire to work both independently and with a team

Must have hands-on experience performing tuning of clusters

Proficiency in one or more scripting languages

Good prioritizing and time management skills

Does not require training nor guidance to evaluate new frameworks and easily comes up to speed as self-starter

Programming experience in at least one non scripting language

Good project management skills

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
Experience supporting an environment consisting of Apache Cassandra database systems

Technically fluent in Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Knowledge of Cassandra systems backup and recovery

Knowledge of Cassandra security

Knowledge of Cassandra server maintenance and tuning

Knowledge of Perl, Python, Shell, Hadoop, Elastic Search, and Redis

Experience in code migration, database change management and data management through the various stages of the development life cycle

Deep understanding of internals of noSQL frameworks

Strong SQL skills experience

Preferred Education, Years of Experience Requirements and Certifications:

Bachelor's Degree or 10 years of equivalent work experience in Computer Science related work

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Certification

One or more database certifications such as Oracle, MySQL, noSQL

Clearance Requirements:
US Citizenship is preferred, residence status will be considered

Ability to be cleared at the Public Trust level
