Department Overview

The Interpretive Services department facilitates effective communication in health care across linguistic and cultural differences,. Professional ASL, Hmong, Laotian, Somali, and Spanish interpretors are on staff and provide services 24 hours-a-day, 7-days a week for patients at Children's.

Position Summary

Provides system-wide foreign language interpreting (verbal) and translation (written) to enable understanding and successful communication between Children's patients/families with limited English proficiency (LEP) and Children's providers and staff. Adheres to NCIHC medical interpreter standards of practice and code of ethics. Facilitates communication across cultural differences. Supports the Interpreter Services Department at Children's through working constructively in a team,participating in program functions, and performing tasks as requested by the program manager. Qualifications Minimum of 40 hours of interpreter training required. Bachelor's degree or an associate degree or certificate in interpreting preferred. Membership in statewide roster for interpreters required. Demonstrated interpreting and translating experience in health-related contexts. Demonstrated verbal proficiency in both English and a target language. Prior experience in and/or demonstrated affinity to working with children and families. Basic computer knowledge required.
