This position will support modeling of losses affecting human populations. The applicant will lead the initiatives for researching and quantifying the impact of earthquake and terrorism events like bombs, chemical, biological and nuclear attacks, on human populations and estimate toxicity or dose due to release of chemical, radiological or biological agents in order to quantify the effect of those on human population. The primary responsibility is development and support of human casualty forecasting models due natural and man-made hazard. Other responsibilities will include internal and external client support. The tasks involved include running proprietary models, conducting literature searches and abstracting data, synthesizing information, preparing documentation, reports, proposals, and presentation materials, and interpretation and analysis of data.
The Model Development group focuses on developing industry leading stochastic catastrophe models for the quantification and management of catastrophe risk. From regional based earthquake and hurricane models to terrorism risk models, the industry and our 100+ clients recognize RMS as the largest developer of catastrophe models in the risk market. RMS continues to drive industry innovation with the enhancement and expansion of our leading models.
Environmental engineering or equivalent.
Knowledge in probability and statistics.
Dispersion modeling and human exposure/dose assessment in order to estimate casualty due to toxicity of chemical, biological, or nuclear agents.
Expertise in accessing and interpreting data and technical publications on casualties related to probabilistic environmental health risk assessments.
Ability to write for technical and non-technical audiences, and to interact effectively with members of analysis team to plan, conduct, and disseminate results of research.
Programming experience, preferably in both statistical and scientific languages (R, MATLAB) and data manipulation tools (SQL, VBA, Excel)
An advanced degree in the field of environmental engineering or environmental health related field. A PhD is preferable.
Experience related to health sciences, or in the health care/insurance industry. Experience with development of probabilistic forecasting models is desired but not required
Ability to quantify and model physical injuries due to collapse of structures (either in an earthquake, or due to a terrorism event) or exposure to chemical, radiological and biological agents.
Ability to model the toxicity or dose due to release of chemical, radiological and biological agents.
A research/analysis background is desired.
Familiarity with the insurance and/or financial industries is desired but not required
