The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) animal resources are comprised of ~100,000 gross assigned sq. ft. in 4 buildings located on the KUMC campus in Kansas City, KS. The entire centralized animal care program at KUMC was fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) in 1992 and has maintained its accreditation since that time. Laboratory Animal Resources has grown to employ 40 persons and provide services for over 100 investigators and 500 research staff.

Under Team Leader supervision, performs routine husbandry, janitorial, and some biotechnical procedures related to the care and use of laboratory animals. Maintains records and assists with the needs of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) department staff and researchers. Performs other duties as assigned by LAR management, including a veterinarian.

Required Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED, and Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification or
AA/AS Degree or Bachelor's degree (in biological sciences, agricultural sciences, or animal science) and pass Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification within six months of hire date.

Must be able and willing to work weekends and holidays
At least 2 years of laboratory animal science experience
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator
Ability to follow written and verbal instructions
Good computer skills
Should receive Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) certification within 2 years of employment
Should receive Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification within 4 years of employment
Should provide three professional references including one from direct supervisor

Completes animal care assignments according to standard operating procedures.

Completes forms and sends email notifications to investigators.

Conducts animal health observations.
Quarantines and isolates animals as needed following appropriate protocols.
Collects various biological samples.
Administers drugs/test compounds via various routes.
Prepares and dispenses experimental compounds, chemicals, drugs, etc, following standard protocols. Pre-weighs and measures liquids and drugs, and loads dispensing apparatus.
Euthanizes animals and disposes of carcasses as required.
