The Central Michigan University College of Medicine (CMED) seeks a qualified physician to serve as Chair of the Medical Disciplines. CMED is replacing the traditional Department Chair model with a Discipline Chair model. In this new model, CMED faculty will report to one of three Discipline Chairs (Foundational Sciences, Medical Disciplines, and Surgical Disciplines). Medical disciplines in this context include the following specialties: emergency medicine, family medicine, internal medicine and subspecialties, neurology, nuclear medicine, pediatrics and subspecialties of pediatrics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, and radiology.
The discipline chair's primary role is to administer and see to the success of the faculty in the medical disciplines. The chair will recruit faculty, have oversight of faculty evaluation, provide development and mentoring, and collaborate with and advise the Dean on reappointment, promotion, and tenure. The chair will provide input on the strategic direction of the medical disciplines and ensure the faculty's participation in the development and implementation of undergraduate and graduate medical education, research, and clinical programs.
The position will be appointed at the rank of Full Professor, with a recommendation for tenure. The position is available immediately with a negotiable start date.
- Administration: Responsible for faculty within the medical disciplines, including recruitment, mentoring, development, annual review, promotion, tenure, re-appointment, and policy and procedural compliance; understand and adhere to the CMED Bylaws and, when appropriate, Faculty Group Practice Bylaws. Implement the missions of the CMED and develop strategic direction for the medical disciplines that align with CMED's strategic vision. Effectively manage physical and financial resources of the medical disciplines, ensuring fiduciary and regulatory agency compliance. May have parallel responsibilities managing a center or related facility. Serve as a role model for collegiality, collaboration across the organization, integrity, scholarship, and professional competence. Develop and mentor individuals to assume roles of leadership nationally and/or within the CMED. Participate in cultural and organizational activities of the CMED. Serve as a leader with regional/national professional impact in his or her field, foster the development and maintenance of expertise in emerging areas of importance in the medical disciplines.
- Clinical practice: Engage in outpatient and/or inpatient clinical work in community based clinics and hospitals (percent clinical effort is variable based on specialty); participate in developing the practice plan of the CMED.
- Scholarly activity: Conduct research and/or scholarly activity relevant to the advancement of medicine and/or medical education that leads to publications and extramural grants; direct student research.
- Teaching: Provide general support for an innovative and clinically oriented medical sciences and clerkship curricula. Assigned teaching load will be appropriate for the administrative, clinical practice and/or research expectations of the position.
M.D. or D.O. degree; certification by an American Board of Medical Specialties or American Osteopathic Association recognized clinical specialty; licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Michigan; established credentials and experience in clinical practice, medical education, leadership, and administration; strong collaborative and communication skills; strong commitment to innovative approaches to education and learning; experience with independent design and conduct of research in relevant academic and/or clinical domains; and demonstrated commitment to diversity.
Demonstrated senior level experience in the areas of clinical practice, teaching, and/or administration within an academic environment or within an accredited teaching program (GME); experience with cross disciplinary teaching; demonstrated experience in patient and/or problem-based medical education; experience with, or a strong knowledge of, pedagogical approaches such as team based learning.
