Charge RN - Step Down Unit

15-bed bedside monitoring unit, caring for post-op CABG, trauma and surgery patients. Also serves post-catherization patients. CVP and Aline monitoring, high-flow oxygen and BiPap.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Charge RN, under the supervision of the Director and/or Clinical Manager, is responsible for overseeing and directing the patient care activities on the unit during a worked shift. Activities specifically include: staffing for current and next shift, determining appropriate staff levels and mix to provide quality care and maintain unit productivity, assign patient care teams, delegate patient care activities to unit and ancillary staff, addresses work flow issues, ensures incidents are appropriately documented and corrective steps are taken, adjudicates job related problems as the first level in the Employee Grievance Procedure, provides credible input regarding employment actions including performance evaluation, promotion, discipline and discharge on a regular basis, and serves as a resource to staff. S/he is directly accountable to the specific Cluster Director and/or Clinical Manager. S/he assists and/or performs procedures that are within the scope of nursing practice. S/he practices within accepted ethical and legal parameters of nursing. S/he has the knowledge and skills to care for the physical and developmental needs of the population within his/her department. The night Charge RN acts as an advocate for the night shift, making sure the Clinical Manager/Director are aware of the unique needs of the night shift.
The scope of practice for a professional nurse shall include the following:
1. Performing those nursing activities for which the professional nurse has been prepared through basic education and additional skills which are obtained through approved continuing education programs;
2. Providing the nursing supervision in the planning for and provision of nursing care to patients and the directing and evaluating of nursing care provided by other licensed nurses and other personnel;
3. Providing patient education, both individualized and to the public;
4. Assessing the patient's needs, planning for, implementing, evaluating and documenting the nursing care being provided to each patient.
A professional nurse shall be responsible both for the nursing care directly provided by the nurse and the care provided by others who are under the professional nurse's supervision.

QUALIFICATIONS:Education:
  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing - required .
  • BSN - preferred.
Experience:
  • Clinical experience within the last year - preferred.
  • Leadership experience in specialty area.
Certificate/Licensure:
  • Current RN License, State of Arizona - required .
  • BLS (American Heart Assoc.) - required upon hire.
  • National Certification in critical care nursing - preferred.
  • ACLS Certification required upon hire.
  • NIH Stroke certification within six (6) months of hire - required .
  • Call required; if yes, must be able to respond to hospital within 30 minutes.
