Day to Day Responsibilities:

This person will serve as a member of the Chemical Engineering Center of Excellence with the following key responsibilities:
  • Perform experimental and theoretical studies, including analytical and computer modeling to improve the fundamental understanding of the mechanisms of chemical processing phenomena.
  • Apply Chemical Engineering first principles, including material and energy balances to optimize fluid flow, heat transfer and mass transfer unit operations such as rheology of non-ideal fluids, heat exchange, ion exchange, etching, adsorption, filtration, drying, solids processing, etc.
  • Design and develop new processes or improve existing chemical processes or products across all Corning business sectors: Science and Technology, Display Technologies, Environmental Technologies, Telecommunications, Life Sciences and Specialty Materials.
  • Act as a subject-matter-expert for some Chemical Engineering unit operations with effective integration of Materials Science and Engineering expertise to achieve required product properties.
  • Lead small process development or improvement projects .
  • Develop or compile project documentation .
  • Present engineering or scientific results to internal stakeholders at different management levels.
  • Measure and communicate performance against established objectives.
Travel Requirements : 0 to 50%, depending on project. Travel to Corning project locations and to vendors/consultants’ offices. Includes international travel with potential duration of several months.

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time : 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Flex-time depending on project.

Required Education:
  • Bachelor in Chemical Engineering plus Masters in ChemE or Materials Science/Engineering. Ph.D. preferred.

Required Years and Area of Experience:
  • 0-3 years of experience

Required Skills:
  • Ability to study and apply Chemical Engineering fundamental principles in a similar manner as in the “Classical” Chemical Industry
  • Good understanding of the following areas:
a. Transport Phenomena

b. Reaction Kinetics

c. Thermodynamics

d. Inorganic Chemistry

e. Electrochemistry
  • Ability to work in a laboratory and manufacturing environment on projects that range from research and development to deployment and troubleshooting of manufacturing processes to deliver next-generation technologies and novel products.
  • Technical curiosity and ability to solve complex problems and improve processes using theoretical analysis or structured problem solving methods such Design of Experiments and Six Sigma
  • Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams
  • Ability to be self-motivated and committed to the Chemical Engineering Department Mission

Desired Skills:
  • Understanding of Materials Science/Engineering for glass and/or ceramics materials and ability to effectively integrate with Chemical Engineering principles
  • Good understanding of the following areas:
a. Coating Fundamentals and Applications

b. Particle Removal from Water Streams

c. Ion Exchange
  • Ability to lead small process development/improvement projects
