PLOS is a nonprofit publisher and advocacy organization with a mission to accelerate progress in science and medicine by leading a transformation in research communication. We are currently looking for a Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to join our growing team. This position will be based at PLOS’ San Francisco headquarters.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CTO will serve as the top technology executive within the organization to create the vision and lead the technology strategy at PLOS. As a member of PLOS’ Executive Team, the CTO will actively participate and collaborate with senior leadership to establish both short and long term strategic plans and objectives to support organizational mission and priorities.
Lead and direct the organization’s overall technology vision, strategy and development for software and IT
Oversee and direct all technology efforts including the management of Director-level reports and functional areas including Web Applications, Software Development, QA, IT Operations, Web Technology and Publishing Systems
Establish and implement transparent operational objectives, processes and policies in support of strategic technology goals
Ensure the organization is positioned to be at the forefront of new technology developments and provide visible leadership for the organization within the technology community including seeking opportunities to engage with open source technologies.
Work closely with key stakeholders to assess the technologies, internal or external, that will best suit the organization
Lead by example to cultivate and maintain a culture built on teamwork and the highest level of personal ethics
Engage other members of the Executive Team to facilitate cross-functional collaboration to support PLOS’ evolving strategy and operations
Maintain a hands-on approach while communicating the strategic vision and delegate activities, projects and assignments so team members can execute accordingly to deliver projects on time and within budget
Use knowledge and experience to quickly assess a strategic direction or change course when necessary
Oversee external technology vendor relationships
Work with team and human resources to develop strategies to recruit top talent
Qualifications and Experience:
12+ years of progressively responsible technology leadership roles with a minimum of 6 years in an executive management capacity. Prior CTO experience preferred.
MBA/MS or equivalent experience preferred
Strong web technologies, web services and API development experience a must. Experience with publishing or media companies a plus.
Experienced in service-oriented architecture and Agile software development methodologies. Experience with QA automation frameworks, continuous integration/deployment practices, and A/B testing a plus.
Experience working on Open Access science, or businesses using Open Source technologies a plus
Experience with scaling organizational infrastructure to support the increasing volume of content and customers, new product offerings, and delivery methods required.
Demonstrable enthusiasm and passion for PLOS’ mission. Interest in science communications a plus.
An experienced executive with excellent leadership ability and strategic skills, integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic, mission driven environment.
Combination of large and medium size organizations preferred. Possesses the foundational rigor learned from years with a large organization as well as the flexibility required within smaller and more nimble environments.
Experience building and leading software development, IT infrastructure and support teams as well as managing mission critical technology development initiatives.
‘Build’ vs. ‘buy’ experience. Extremely aware of industry standards and cutting edge solutions and able to leverage existing technologies and best of breed industry solutions in combination with internally developed software.
Vendor and outsourcing management experience
Passionate leader capable of driving significant change and re-invention in support of evolving organizational needs
Proven ability to drive solutions aligned with overall organizational strategy
