The Children’s Activity Leader is an entry-level role with a high degree of direct interaction with children and an emphasis on providing opportunities for positive, pro-social development. Seated in the transitional housing residences, this position assists in the on-site therapeutic Afterschool program and coordinates the Evening Volunteer Playspace. In conjunction with the Afterschool team and Playspace volunteers, the Children’s Activity Leader develops and supervises free and structured play that provides children with a variety of new experiences, including creative self exploration and opportunities to learn and practice problem solving skills.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist with on-site therapeutic Afterschool program;
Teach in the Afterschool program alongside two co-teachers;
Help develop and implement tailored Afterschool curriculum;
Assist in planning and implementing therapeutic strategies for individual children within the residences;
Participate in clinical supervision and Afterschool team meetings; Coordinate and supervise Evening Volunteer Playspace; Supervise children and volunteers during Evening Playspace, three evenings per week;
Recruit and interview new volunteers;
Facilitate quarterly supervision of evening volunteers;
Provide on-going training and support to volunteers;
Maintain Horizons Playspace supplies and materials;
Provide child care when needed;
Work as a member of the TSS Residential Program Team, participating in on-call phone rotation, attending monthly staff meetings and on-going professional development workshops and trainings;
Attend to other Second Step priorities as needed or assigned.
Hours: 40 Hours a week. Typically 12-8 three days per week; 10-6, two days per week with flexibility needed.
Energy, enthusiasm, and passion;
Bachelor’s degree preferred;
Bilingual candidates preferred (Spanish, Haitian-Creole etc.); Experience working with school-aged children;
Experience working with survivors of domestic violence helpful
