In Disaster Services, Civil Engineers are deployed to be Project Specialists for the FEMA Public Assistance Program for the preparation of Project Worksheets. A Specialist has the expertise that is specific to their discipline. A Civil Engineer should understand waste water utilities, water supply utilities, road construction, drainage structure design as well as bridge and airport design. The Civil Engineer should be able to assess damages, prepare estimates, determine best practices for restoration, coordinate/manage other specialists and prepare technical reports. The Civil Engineer may provide assistance to the Building Assessment Team (BAT). The Civil Engineer may have to determine mitigation opportunities for culverts, waste water treatment plants, water supply system and drainage structures.
Candidate must possess at a minimum an undergraduate degree, have 2 years of practical experience, and must have completed the FEMA Operations I & II courses. A Professional license is not required but is preferred. Experience in FEMA disaster response and recovery is preferred.
