The Umbrella Claims Supervisor oversees and advises claims associates in the handling, processing, and adjustment of Umbrella/Excess claims on all casualty product lines (along with incidental primary claim handling) in accordance with company policies and procedures. In coordination with the Claims VP, this Supervisor is responsible for the overall management of the Umbrella/Excess line of business. These claims involve a high degree of technical evaluation and often include heavy litigation, large exposure, and complex coverage issues. The Claim Supervisor will be expected to work with the direct claim handlers to analyze and resolve such cases, through litigation or negotiation, as appropriate.


-Maintain an efficient claim staff to dispose of all claims promptly, fairly, and in accordance with applicable policy provisions, state laws and regulations, and company policies

-Participate with Claims Management in the planning, processing, and establishment of business objectives

-Maintain C&F Best Practices on all claims

-Reduce the cycle time for claim settlement and/or disposition through early recognition of exposures and timely/accurate exposure analysis

-Develop and train a skilled claims staff to promote individual accountability.

-Oversee interaction with reinsurers, including timely and complete reporting; and coordination of reinsurance audits

-Coordinate umbrella department adjuster licensing

-Participate in training/continuing education as necessary

-Interact with other departments (e.g. underwriting, actuarial, reinsurance, etc.) and Senior Management as warranted

-As needed, market claim service and participate in presentations to customers or prospective customers

-Provide superior customer service to all agents, insureds, claimants and others encountered during the claims handling process

-May work on special projects, as assigned

-Travel may be required, as claims often require in-person attendance of differing levels of Company representatives


-Prior Supervisory experience required, with a minimum of five years supervising casualty claims, including umbrella, in multiple jurisdictions, preferably nationwide

-Outstanding presentation skills

-Exceptional organizational skills

-Outstanding interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with support staff, claims staff, underwriting peers, policyholders, and senior management

-College degree required
