The patient care coordinator (PCC) will work with a specific preceptor group consisting of two faculty doctors and approximately eight junior and eight senior dental students. The PCC will coordinate all aspects of the groups’ patient care from scheduling and treatment plan input to recall for an approximate patient base of 525.


  • Coordinate all patient appointments for DMD students including possible after hours confirmation of appointments.
  • Receive appointment cancellation calls and attempt to fill vacant time slot with another patient.
  • Meet with patient after their visit to schedule next appointment.
  • Handle recall for preceptor group.
  • Follow-up with dental labs to ensure lab cases are returned to the dental school in time for the patient’s next appointment.
  • Serve as the patient advocate for all patients with the preceptor group.
  • Responsible for filing and obtaining patient charts for students in their respective preceptor groups. It is also the PCC’s responsibility to know the whereabouts of a patient’s chart at all times.
  • Work with the preceptor to appoint appropriate patient cases to the students, to help ensure a well rounded clinical education.
  • Meet regularly with the group preceptors to ensure the efficiency of the patient care/service being provided.
  • Provide the preceptors, on a regular basis, with clinical procedural data, patient numbers and treatment plans of the family of patients each student in their group sees.
  • Position will entail occasional weekend work for such events as Prophy day, NERB’s, WREB’s and other events as may occur.
  • Assist in coordinating patient appointments with any of the specialty clinics within the dental school.
  • Serve as a resource person for students on completing necessary paperwork and following proper clinical protocol procedures.
  • Responsible for ensuring quality assurance of all patient records.
  • Assist sophomore and freshman DMD students assigned to the group practice with scheduling appointments to meet prophy requirements.


    Perform other duties assigned by the Clinical PCC Supervisor or Assistant Clinical PCC Supervisor.

    External: Contact with patients and labs on a daily basis.

    Students: Contact with preceptor group students on a daily basis.


    No supervisory responsibility.


    Experience: 2 to 3 years work experience. Should have practical hands-on experience in either a dental office or dental educational facility. Experience in patient scheduling and completion of insurance forms.

    Education/Licensing: High school diploma required.


  • Ability to deal with diverse groups of patients, students, and faculty.
  • Should possess above average computer skills in the areas of spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Knowledge of third party reimbursement procedures and a working knowledge of dental terminology preferred.
  • Experience with excel and database applications.


    Fast paced dental school DMDS clinical operation. Will deal with a broad range of patients with varying degrees of physical and mental handicaps. Use of or potential exposure to chemicals. Use of or potential exposure to human blood or tissue. Physical location will be within the clinic area.
