Working in the California Office, located in Berkeley, the Climate Scientist will be expected to design and carry out research to assess the projected impacts of climate change on vulnerable and resonant sectors and populations in California. Reporting to the UCS California and Western States Director, the Climate Scientist will help lead UCS efforts to provide California and US public and policymakers with robust, timely, accessible and policy-relevant information on climate science. The Climate Scientist’s work will also focus on the following key activities: 1) Providing expert technical and analytical advice to campaigns in California and other states as needed; 2) Conducting related research, outreach, and media activities, primarily focused on climate work in California; 3) Providing project management and staff supervision when needed; and 4) Researching and associated work in other Western states when needed.
Qualifications and experience
Ideal candidates will have a strong background in climate change science and impacts and three to five years of progressively responsible relevant work experience. These could include collaborative work in academic research teams or government research programs or the application of climate science to public policy and experience in communicating science to a wide variety of audiences. National and international experience and existing relationships in the climate science and climate policy communities is desirable. Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant field. Formal education can be from a range of areas of specialization relevant to the broad scope of climate change science, impacts and sustainable paths forward. These include, but are not limited to climate-relevant research in the atmosphere, ecosystems, land use, agriculture, hydrology, and oceans.
Compensation, Hours and Location: This is a full time position based in UCS’s Berkeley, California office. For candidates who meet all position requirements, the salary is in the mid to high $80s.
