Position summaryThe Registered Nurse (RN) assists the physician in all procedures and examinations of each patient. Assists in the lab collection and explanation of diagnostic tests. Demonstrates fidelity to Franciscan Physician Network's mission. Displays a high regard for human life and respects the dignity, uniqueness, worth and rights of each individual.Essential Job FunctionsClinical DutiesPrepare examination and treatment areas. Prepares examination and treatment areas prior to and after patient encounter which includes rooms stocked with no expired supplies, equipment functioning properly while following infection control guidelines.Prepares patients and assists physician with examinations, treatments and procedures. Introduce self, wear name badge, obtain and document vital signs, chief complaint, history and other pertinent information relevant to the visit.Document data collected during the patient care process via electronic or paper medical record. All documentation done completely, accurately and in a timely manner following charting guidelines.Prepares and administers medications and immunizations under physician's supervision. expiration dates, distribute vaccine information sheet (VIS) and properly chart via electronic or paper medical record.Collects, completes and processes lab specimens and required paperwork. Direct patient in specimen collection and/or collect appropriate specimen for lab testing, accurately completes requisition or electronic documentation and prepares specimen for pick-up.Performs diagnostic tests and treatment procedures, i.e. EKG, urine dipsticks, etc. Done continuously, accurately and as authorized.Orders, monitors and maintains adequate supply level of medications and clinical supplies. Regular monitoring/ordering/maintaining of medication and clinical supplies.Provide pre-certifications of surgeries, including insurance form completion. Done professionally and in a timely manner.Maintain the dignity and confidentiality of the patient. Maintains patient confidentiality and follows HIPAA compliance guidelines. Make sure to meet legal and institutional standards.Practices Established Quality Control GuidelinesChecks medications for expiration dates and proper labels. Consistently monitor expiration dates and proper labeling.Maintains sample medications for proper logging, expiration dates and proper labels. Monitor drug expiration dates, log samples appropriately, and use available electronic technology such as e-prescribing. Acts as liaison with drug company representatives and maintains locked drug cabinet.Participates in the performance and completion of quality assessment techniques in the clinical area, i.e., glucometer controls, sterilizer reports, refrigerator temp logs, etc. Actively participate and be knowledgeable.Cleans, prepares and stocks exam rooms at the end of the day. Maintain general appearance and cleanliness according to OSHA standards and company policy and procedures.Disposes of contaminated sharps and disposable items in proper containers and contacts medical disposal service for pickups. Regularly handles the pickup/disposal of contaminated medical items through the contracted medical disposal service.Assists with Patient Care Follow-up EducationRespond to telephone calls from patients or other medical personnel; answer questions. Respond professionally and in a timely manner.Assists physician with screening and follow-up with patient test results and expedites referrals to other health care providers as required. Expedites referrals to other health care providers as required per physician.Communicates diagnostic results appropriately to the physician and patient. Communicate via phone to physician and/or providing pertinent written instruction for patients.Calls in new prescriptions and refills as directed by the physician. Calls in new prescriptions and refills as directed by the physician/provider.Implements teaching and counseling techniques to meet the level of patient/family comprehension in conjunction with instruction provided by the physician. Provides teaching/counseling techniques to patient/families as requested by the physician in a timely manner.Provides information literature and educational instructions to health care promotion and disease prevention to patient, families and community. As instructed by provider, provide information/literature and educational instruction for health care promotion and disease prevention to patient, family and community.Clerical ResponsibilitiesPrepare chart for patient visit. Chart set up properly, test results available for physician review via electronic or paper chart.Assist with scheduling, coordinating and monitoring inpatient and outpatient appointments, admissions, procedures. Demonstrate thorough understanding of scheduling product, test requirements/preps and admission processes. Relays patient clinical concerns and appointment needs to physician.Support medical record management. Document appropriately in the patient record for example but not limited to, patient ID, signs/dates, organizes chart appropriately, files items in chart order uses available electronic technology or paper charting protocol.Update patient information as needed. Accurately input and update patient demographic information via electronic technology.Promote compliance with documentation requirements. Complete appropriate documentation on all clinically related forms.Accurately maintain medical record either electronic or paper. Updates files as necessary to include all test results, interpretations and physician/provider consultations and dictation, if paper chart.Records management. Send or receive medical records via appropriate method including acquiring proper authorization.Maintains electronic skills Responsible to maintain current knowledge of software product, for example EPIC, to include scanning in proper documentation for chart.Provide schedule Update and print providers schedule as needed.Call patients Call patients to confirm or reschedule appointments as necessary or communicate information.Gather accurate information for billing. Assists with the provision of accurate billing information, ICD-9 and CPT codes, as appropriate.Orders supplies Orders clerical or medical supplies, as appropriate.Perform all duties and responsibilities as assigned. Perform in a manner consistent with and supportive of the mission and values of the Franciscan St. Elizabeth Health.Assumes Responsibility for Professional Self-DevelopmentAnnual education Completes required annual education via learning compass, if appropriate.Mandatory training programs Attend all mandatory programs, per management.Participate in 75% of office meetings Notify manager of anticipated absence. Must review minutes of any missed meetings.Participate in performance improvement activities related to job or facility. Committee participation, if applicable.Seek new methods and principles. Seeks out new methods, receiving current processes and incorporates efficiencies into existing practices.Knowledge, skills abilitiesMust have good communication skills in dealing with patients, physicians and other personnel.Must have good organizational skills.Computer experience preferred.1-2 years physician office experience preferred.Pharmaceutical knowledge (beneficial effects, side effects, safe administration) a must.Knowledge of job related medical equipment.Minimum qualifications Education Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and BSN diploma. Licensure Must hold current applicable state nursing license. CPR certification required. Other Not applicable
