General Statement of Job
This position supervises the nutritional aspects of patient care and provides services to support the department in meeting the regulatory requirements. Employees plan food and nutrition programs, supervises the preparation and serving of meals and suggests diet modifications for patients within the hospital facility. This position functions as a liaison between the nursing and food services departments to coordinate the nutritional needs of patients.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Supervises the nutritional aspect of patient care and assures the provision of quality nutritional care of patients.
Assesses nutritional needs, diet restrictions, and current health plans of patients to develop and implement dietary-care plans and provide nutritional counseling.
Consults with physicians and health care personnel to determine nutritional needs and diet restrictions of patients.
Educates patients on basic rules of good nutrition, healthy eating habits, and nutrition monitoring to improve their quality of life.
Monitors food service operations to ensure conformance to nutritional, safety, sanitation and quality standards.
Coordinates recipe development and standardization.
Develops and reviews nutritional care policies and procedures with the in keeping with state and federal regulatory requirements.
Inspects meals served for conformance to standards and regulatory requirements.
Coordinates diet counseling services as needed.
Advises food service managers and hospital in matters regarding sanitation, safety procedures, menu development, budgeting, and planning to assist with the establishment, operation and evaluation of food service facilities and nutrition programs.
Develops and conducts education for patients, staff and other healthcare professionals as required.
Provides recommendations regarding patient policy, such as nutrition labeling, food fortification, and nutrition standards for hospital programs.
Provides reports to Administration concerning the extent of nutritional services provided on a regular basis.
Provides reports on the quality program for food service in keeping with regulatory agency requirements.
Serves as a liaison with medical and nursing staff.
Provides timely patient and family counseling as needed.
Reviews menus and modified diets.
Participates in development of policy, procedures and continuing education programs in regards to nutrition.
Completes a comprehensive documented evaluation of dietetic services at least annually.
Participates in the hospital wide quality improvement program.
Maintains pertinent and accurate documentation for patients’ records.
Emergency duty may be required of the incumbent that includes working in special needs or Red Cross shelters or to perform other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to threats or disasters, man-made or natural.

Bachelor's Degree from an American Dietetic Association (ADA) accredited program required; Master’s Degree in same preferred.
One (1) to two (2) years experience in planning care, charting and nutritional care preferred.
Dietitian certification required.
State of Florida license as a Nutritionist required.
