The Clinical Psychologist provides direct care to patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and their families, and advice to medical staff regarding psychosocial issues that interfere with patients’ and family members’ ability to manage diabetes. A primary focus for the Clinical Psychologist is to work with Latino patients and their families, and to develop behavioral and psychological interventions focused on the Latino population.

Responsibilities:

Direct treatment of patients and families
  • evaluates and diagnoses psychiatric and psychosocial problems
  • chooses appropriate therapy
  • recognizes potential effects of interventions
  • actively refers patients to appropriate clinicians
  • provides ongoing family support

Works in collegial fashion with other healthcare professionals
  • provides a management plan for treatment
  • consults with other healthcare providers for relevant treatment decisions
  • shares appropriate care with other healthcare professionals
  • attends and participates in clinical and educational conferences
  • provides consultation to other medical professionals at Joslin Clinic
  • satisfies departmental teaching obligations

Maintains excellent communication with administrative staff
  • works constructively and collaboratively with the Chief of the Mental Health Unit and with the Medical Director of Latino Programs
  • reports as needed to the Chief Medical Officer and Director of Clinical Operations

Participates in development activities
  • presents lectures and other programs for physicians and other clinic staff
  • participates in Joslin community activities such as lectures, health fairs, etc.

Program development
  • develops innovative intervention programs for patients and their families
  • designs and completes outcomes evaluation of programs
  • presents in appropriate settings the results of all program development activities

Culturally oriented program development
  • Within the structure of the Latino Diabetes Initiative, develops patient and provider education materials in the area of mental health and diabetes
  • Integrates materials for patients and families that can be utilized on line to extend the reach of these educational interventions
  • Contributes to developing professional education materials in the area of mental health and diabetes in the Latino population
  • Participates in LDI educational and research projects as needed

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or Psy.D. Psychology
  • Clinical experience working with Latino populations.
  • Licensed psychologist (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) in the State of Massachusetts.
  • Familiarity with medical conditions, especially diabetes. Fluent in Spanish. Clinical experience working with Latino populations.
