  • Primary responsibility for data administration of the Long-term Effects of Corneal Refractive Surgery in the DOD Study.
  • Assist in the creation, development, and maintenance of databases for previous, current, and upcoming research projects including the” Long-term Effects of Corneal Refractive Surgery in the DOD”.
  • Enter and track research data in computer databases and study worksheets, records, and reports.
  • Manage computer entry of research data generated by clinical staff and multiple sites within the DOD and Veterans Administration.
  • Review subject records for accuracy and completeness and identify and resolve any discrepancies/inconsistencies.
  • Review and update study-related datasets and documents for accuracy and completeness, and identify and resolve any discrepancies/inconsistencies.
  • Review, incorporate/create, and maintain data entry processes and instructions based on individual research protocols.
  • Organize and store medical records, worksheets, Case Report Forms (CRFs), Data Clarification Forms (DCFs), and other study data forms; archive study data at study completion.
  • Schedule study patients, ensuring that appointments fall within FDA window requirements for the study in which they are participating.
  • Provide assistance in conducting visual performance tests in a variety of settings:
    • Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity
    • Aircraft Carrier Landing and Combat Driving Simulators
    • Wave-front aberration measurements, and
    • Other testing as required by research protocols
    • Aid in the statistical analysis of data, prepare tables and graphs of results, and participate in manuscript preparation.
    • Coordinate and interact with Refractive Surgery Center technicians, doctors, scientists, and research personnel to identify priorities and timelines, maximize clinical/research efficiency, and ensure compliance with study and regulatory policies.
  • Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
  • Performs light duties and other related duties as required and assigned.


  • A high school diploma and two years of experience in clinical research (DOD clinical research preferred, but not required) to include but not limited to scheduling patients, coordinating patient databases, analysis of data, coordination of patient/subject data. Experience in Optometry or Ophthalmology clinical research preferred.
  • Proficiency with office equipment (e.g., computers, multi-line telephone system, voicemail, facsimile, copier, printers), as well as scientific and business software for word processing, presentations, spreadsheets, database management, statistical analyses, and email communications. This includes, but is not limited to, Microsoft Office 2007 (i.e., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with civilian and military personnel at various levels.
  • HIPAA trained.
  • Two letters of reference written within the past six months attesting to the contract worker’s clinical research experience and experience within the ophthalmic/vision research setting (if any.) Letters must include the name, title, and telephone number, date of reference, address and signature of the individual providing the reference.
  • Must be able to work independently following a brief period of specific technical training.
