Participates in the implementation and coordination of clinical trials and community education programs following GCP and FDA regulations. Assists Clinical Research Coordinators with clinical trials and Education Program Manager with community outreach programs.

Act as a Health Navigator for the MedStar Health Hair Heart and Health Program and work at designated barbershops to provide screening, education, and navigations services for those barbershop patrons with high blood pressure, prediabetes or diabetes. Position requires a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the assigned barbershops: CRA will work with Program Manager to determine the best possible schedule to maximize patron enrollment and outreach. Position will require late afternoon and evening work several days a week and 6-8 hours each Saturday as needed to accommodate the needs of the program.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Recruits those with high blood pressure and/or diabetes into the Hair Heart and Health program.
  • Obtains consents from barbershop patrons to participate in the program.
  • Documents participants’ data in the RedCap data base.
  • Administers surveys to program participants.
  • Performs blood pressure and finger stick blood glucose measurements and weighs program participants.
  • Follows program procedures as outlined in the manual of operations.
  • Educates program participants on the self-care behaviors to manage hypertension and diabetes.
  • Assists in completion of Medicaid/DC Alliance application if participant does not have health insurance.
  • Assists participants in identifying a primary care provider if s/he does not have one and setting up appointments.
  • Follows-up with participants regarding action plans and follow-up on navigation (insurance, provider, other).


  • 11. Assists in the preparation and submission of regulatory documents and supporting forms including appropriately modified consent forms to the Office of Research Integrity/Institutional Review Board and Sponsor.

    12. Assists MDI program manager with set up and implementation of community events and programs, including patient health system navigation that are part of MDI’s community education initiatives and Dept of Health supported grants.

    13. Assists in the maintenance of required clinical and regulatory files.

    14. Participates in conferences, departmental meetings, and continuing education, as needed. Work with the MDI’s Education Programs Manager in coordinating and implementing programs held in the community to include: participating in the development of program materials, recruiting and consenting of participants, teaching classes, communicating with staff at the various program sites, documenting progress and preparing progress and activity reports.

    15. Seeks and avails self of opportunities to develop and advance knowledge base in diabetes and cardiovascular disease prevention and management.

    16. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    EDUCATION: High school degree or GED diploma is required. Bachelors degree preferred. May require one to three years of technical or other specialized training. Requires the use of standard office/medical equipment (i.e., typewriter, personal computer, data terminal, on-line printer, calculator, telephone, facsimile, copier, sterilizing equipment, blood pressure cuff, OR tables); the preparation, comparison or checking of reports, records and related data; and basic use of formulas, charts, tables, drawings and knowledge of their application

    Certification, Registration, and/or Licensure: Certification or license as a nurse, practical nurse, dietitian medical assistant or , or a community health worker is preferred.

    EXPERIENCE: From 1 to 3 years experience required in a customer oriented medical setting exhibiting excellent oral communication and customer service skills. Good knowledge of interviewing and recording techniques. Competent in use of internet and computer-based technology, including, MS Office.
