The Office of the University Veterinarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (VT) is seeking a Clinical Veterinarian with experience in laboratory animal medicine to join a diverse program encompassing scientific, biomedical and agricultural teaching and research programs. The position supports and collaborates with the Attending Veterinarian to plan, implement and direct the programmatic and operational activities of animal care and use at institutional facilities and assures proper husbandry and veterinary care of university-owned animals. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Attending Veterinarian, facility managers/supervisors, clinical specialists from the College of Veterinary Medicine (e.g., Production Management Medicine, Equine Field Service, pathology), and agricultural scientists to develop and manage a comprehensive program of veterinary care and husbandry compliant with Public Health Service and USDA regulations; provide clinical veterinary care for teaching and research animals, including rodents, aquatics, wildlife, and farm animals; advise and train investigators, technical staff and students; and perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. The College of Veterinary Medicine is currently AAALAC accredited. This position will assist in maintaining AAALAC accreditation and achieving it elsewhere on campus.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A DVM/VMD degree from an AVMA-accredited veterinary college with significant clinical veterinary experience. - Virginia veterinary license or the ability to acquire. - Strong veterinary clinical, anesthetic, and surgical skills with a variety of animals from rodents to farm animals. - Demonstrated ability to interact professionally, positively, and collaboratively with others in a spirit of service while ensuring compliance requirements are met in a reasonable timeframe. - Demonstrated computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and use of email. - Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complex documents such as research protocols, regulations, policies, and facility architectural floor plans. - Excellent communication, interpersonal, time management and customer service skills along with the ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Residency training by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or other related College (e.g., ACVIM, ACVS, ACVP), board eligibility for ACLAM or interest and ability to obtain board certification. - Dual degree consisting of DVM/VMD and PhD or MS in a basic or clinical science or related fields with significant relevant experience. - Demonstrated research publication record. - Successful grant writing or equivalent experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the granting process. - Demonstrated working knowledge of, experience with or strong interest in farm animals. - Current and relevant working knowledge of regulations governing the use of animals in teaching and research (e.g., USDA, PHS, AAALAC).
