James River Clubhouse Manager
The Country Club of Virginia is a full-service private club located in Richmond, Virginia. CCV was founded in 1908, and since that time has been consistently recognized as one of the finest clubs in the United States. In 2012, CCV was voted the finest country club in Virginia and ranked fifteenth in the nation.
The club's 7,400+ members support 1,111 acres containing two superb clubhouses situated seven miles apart, 54 holes of golf, 24 tennis courts (6 indoor), three squash courts, three paddle tennis courts, a 40,000 square foot fitness facility, five pools, a croquet field, and multiple dining outlets and special event venues. In season, CCV employs a staff of approximately 600 and has an operating budget in excess of $25 million. The Club's motto, “An Evolution to Excellence Through Continuous Improvement,” can be seen in all aspects of the operation.
The James River property is the golfing center of the Club, with a pro shop and two golf courses—each with its own practice facilities—on its property. The James River campus is also home to a large clubhouse which includes three member dining rooms, two snack bars, locker rooms, offices, and support facilities. A la carte lunch and dinner, along with golf outings and banquets, make up the $1.2 million in annual revenue generated at James River. The club also has substantial areas devoted to wildlife and boating activities, including a boat landing and boat storage.
The Clubhouse Manager has principal responsibility for all day-to-day activity at the James River location, with the exception of golf. The position supervises a staff of 35, including two managers, and works in partnership with the Director of Golf, the Golf Course Superintendent, the James River Chef, and the Marketing Director. The Clubhouse Manager reports to the Executive Director of Clubhouse Operations and serves on the F & B Advisory Committee.
This position entails significant autonomy and responsibility. In addition to its principal emphasis on food and beverage, security, housekeeping, and facility maintenance are key areas of responsibility. The position has full P & L responsibility for all areas of supervision and has lead responsibility in the development of budgets and sales plans for the James River location. The position offers substantial exposure to all facets of clubhouse operations and is considered an excellent grooming opportunity for a manager who aspires to be General Manager of a private club.
The ideal candidate will have a proven ability to recruit, train, and develop a first-rate service team as well as the skills to develop budgets, implement controls, and achieve financial goals. Experience managing other managers is required, and a hospitality degree is preferred. A hands-on management style and solid administrative skills will be essential. Strong knowledge of food and wine is necessary, as well as an understanding and appreciation for the game of golf.
