QUALIFICATIONS: Required 2 to 3 years of undergraduate education or equivalent. Must demonstrate thorough working knowledge of the practices in a specialized field. More than one up to three years of related work experience required, demonstrating a working knowledge of the job responsibilities and methods.Desired Prefer two years minimum for New Grad coding of inpatient and/or outpatient in an acute care or hospital setting. Required Credentialed by the AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). CE requirement to remain credentialed is 20-30 CE's every two years.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Consults and assists physicians with the identification of necessary documentation for appropriate assignment and proper sequencing of diagnoses and procedures codes.Collaborates with patient accounts, registration, case managers and other clinical areas to provide coding reimbursement expertise; identifies and resolves incorrect registration issues.Utilizes clinical and financial applications to obtain patient clinical information for coding purposes.Enters ICD-9 and CPT-4 codes, and abstracts information into the clinical and financial system for final billing.Reconciles OCE edits within the HDM and ARMS system.Analyzes medical records for physician documentation requirements according to state and federal licensing standards, medical staff rules and regulations, JCAHO standards and departmental policies; flags appropriate physician for chart completion.Reviews medical records for proper identification of complications; performs quality of documentation reviews as needed for the documentation review team or a medical records quality improvement initiative.
