Coding Specialists provide accurate and timely assignment of appropriate diagnostic and procedural code(s) on the medical records for the purpose of collecting and indexing quality health information for various patient types (inpatient, day surgery, emergency room, and outpatient).
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Reviews the medical record, super bill, and/or charge sheet to identify the diagnoses and procedures and assigns ICD-9-CM codes to each.
Identifies and assigns CPT-4 codes to all outpatient procedures.
Abstracts diagnostic and procedural codes and other pertinent data into the network system as defined in Policy and Procedures.
Reviews the "Claims Held Report" as needed, and codes and abstracts any accounts that were missed. Provides information on specific problem accounts to the Coding Supervisor.
High School Diploma or equivalent. Some college and CPC and/or CCS preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, and computers.
One (1) year experience in both inpatient and outpatient coding.
Demonstrated problem solving and communication skills, demonstrated attention to detail, and demonstrated written communication skills that are legible to others.
