Under general supervision of the Coding Supervisor, performs functions associated with coding, abstracting and the revenue cycle. Major Duties: Meets organizational expectations as defined by the Employee Standards of Performance, hospital and department policies and procedures, and the hospital’s strategic goals. Verbalizes a clear understanding of continuous quality improvement and customer satisfaction measures and actively participates in improvement initiatives. Reviews patient records for appropriate documentation, accurately assigns ICD-9-CM codes for diagnoses and procedures and CPT codes for procedures on applicable records. Enters and or verifies abstract data elements. Meets productivity and quality standards for coding and abstracting. Applies knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, disease processes and national coding guidelines when assigning codes. Utilizes the computerized encoder and abstracting system correctly and efficiently, including all available reference material. Performs coding related tasks such as completes physician request forms and abstract fields when documentation is not complete. Clearly communicates problems/issues to supervisor that affect the revenue cycle. Attends and or participates in seminars, educational opportunities as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the organization.

Education/Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Preferred: Knowledge of common drugs and indications of usage, knowledge of prospective payment systems, knowledge of ancillary testing (laboratory, x-ray, EKG). CCS(Certified Coding Specialist), RHIT(Registered Health Information Technician), RHIA(Registered Health Information Administrator). CCS, RHIT, RHIA. Required: Knowledge of a natomy, physiology, medical terminology, disease processes, national coding guidelines, common drugs and indication of usage. Knowledge of prospective payment systems ( DRG/APC groupings) and ancillary testing (laboratory, x-ray, ekg, etc). Basic knowledge of computers including Excel and Word programs. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Ability to conduct duties in a professional manner. High School Diploma or equivalency. Completion of basic ICD-9-CM and CPT coding course. 4 years of ICD-9-CM Medicare coding experience in an acute care hospital.
