Reviews official medical records with physician/healthcare provider documentation and assigns appropriate codes for all physician/healthcare provider services from current editions of official coding sources.
Ensures accurate, complete, and timely code assignments for all physician/healthcare provider services to include procedural, diagnosis, and supplies in all places of service by performing the following duties.
Assign and record appropriate CPT and ICD -9 codes on billing documents; Stay informed of federal and state regulations regarding professional services, coding, billing and reimbursement; Perform data entry of provider charges into the billing system; Attending seminars and continuing educations courses regarding coding and reimbursements; actively participate in team processes and staff development and training.
Education and/or Experience:
High School graduate or equivalency required. Two years of coding and reimbursement experience, preferably in a physician group or health care institution. Must include procedural and diagnosis coding. Prefer experience in academic health care setting.
High School graduate or equivalency required. Documented successful of procedural and diagnosis coding course in TTUHSC recognized community college, technical/vocational education/training institution or Professional Medical Coding Curriculum through American Academy of Professional Coders ( AAPC ).
High School graduate or equivalency required. Current certification through the American Health Information Management Association ( AHIMA ) in the following areas:
Certified Coding Specialist-Physician based ( CCS -P).
Certified Coding Specialists ( CCS ).
Certified in Healthcare Privacy ( CHP ).
Registered Health Information Administrator ( RHIA ).
Registered Health Information Technician ( RHIT ).
Certified Coding Associate.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Current certification through the American Academy of Professional Coders ( AAPC ) in of the following areas:
Certified Professional Coder ( CPC ).
Certified Professional Coder-Hospital ( CPH -H).
Certification to remain current during term of employment.
Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to write clear, concise reports, and business correspondence; ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Database software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Problem-solving skills and self-starter; ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one- or two-step instructions; ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.
Knowledge of the CPT , ICD -CM, and HCPCS nomenclature, coding rules and guidelines; understanding of medical terminology and body systems/anatomy and physiology and concepts of disease processes; knowledge of inpatient and outpatient medical records processing and federal and state reimbursement regulations; dependable in both production and attendance.
Coding Certification preferred but not required initially. Ability to obtain certification as CPC from AAPC within three years of date of employment required.
