Job Description: Senior Media Specialist - New York Office
The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a nonprofit scientific and charitable organization founded in 1996 whose mission is to ensure the development of safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccines for use throughout the world. IAVI's work focuses on four areas: accelerating scientific progress; mobilizing public support through issue advocacy and education; encouraging industrial involvement in AIDS vaccine development; and working to assure global access to a vaccine. Support the global communications strategy in both traditional and new media work led by Media Officer.
Monitor current media activity in AIDS vaccine R&D, AIDS prevention, global health, etc to ensure accurate reporting and appropriate responses.
Actively post to new media outlets including Twitter and Facebook under the guidance of the Media Officer.
Assist blog placement process, which could include writing drafts and liaising with outlets
Monitor relevant external blogs to inform content for social media posts and Daily News entries, as well as to flag information/conversations for relevant IAVI staff
Monitor social media accounts for relevant discussion of HIV vaccine R&D and related topics
Support IAVI’s social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN, YouTube)
Work with production manager to ensure visual requests/enhancements are made to new media outlets
Conduct daily media monitoring and write and distribute Daily News emails to be disseminated to IAVI staff and select partners and stakeholders
Work with communications external affairs teams to brainstorm, develop, and refine organizational messaging
Via IAVI’s internal review process, the Communications Associate will help ensure message accuracy and consistency in all IAVI materials
Draft messaging and communications documents for internal and external purposes
Support the management and maintenance of all aspects of the www.IAVI.org public web site
Ensure website is integrated with other new media activities
Working with the Director of Global Communications, develop and implement internal communications strategies as necessary, and to develop and refine all internal communications tools, including updating the intranet homepage, developing staff meeting agendas and organizing brown bags and Town Hall meetings. The Communications Associate may play a role in identifying opportunities to celebrate staff and IAVI accomplishments, and in organizing such celebrations.
Communications Team Support .
Provide general support to the communications team, including copy editing and writing tasks
Serve as backup press officer/media outreach representative
Develop annual communications team workplans for specific donors including but not limited to USAID
Define and adjust goals/targets/evaluation measures for IAVI’s communications work
Provide support to the Director Communications managing the COMMS budget including helping to develop and the annual departmental budget, executing day-to-day management of the budget, including tracking expenditures, monitoring actuals, and implementing budget shifts when necessary.
Facilitate the management of departmental contracts and consultants.
. The ideal candidate will have:
Strong writing skills, online technology experience (HTML, SharePoint, PhotoShop a plus)
Ability to juggle multiple tasks; ability to work with diverse teams;
Experience of working in a communications function - including working with the media , and drafting press releases or other external documents, and website management
Excellent editing skills
Knowledge of AIDS vaccines and/or global health/ science issues and advantage
Some experience of monitoring and managing budgets and contracts for services
