As a key member of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute communications team, the communications coordinator will be responsible for a range of communications and marketing projects in support of VTC. Under the direction of the director of communications, the communications coordinator will write and edit news stories and features; respond to media inquiries; organize and publicize events; contribute to the development and production of the VTC website and electronic and print publications; contribute to social media strategy; coordinate special projects; draft and produce promotional materials; conduct photo research; coordinate photo shoots; track and evaluate media coverage and online analytics; lead tours; and conduct other duties as assigned. The successfully selected candidate must be able to work with accuracy and creativity while demonstrating high proficiency using word processing, image processing, content management system, and social media tools. Communications Coordinator is expected to have excellent interpersonal, time management, and organizational skills, with the ability to work under tight deadlines and to manage multiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.
- A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or a related field, and/or equivalent training and experience. - Excellent writing and editing skills and experience. - Previous professional experience in communications, including media relations, print publications, and electronic communications. - Demonstrated marketing skills. - Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team and independently.
- Experience working in higher education. - Experience communicating scientific and medical content to a general audience. - Experience with medical and scientific organizations. - Experience working in a multicultural environment. - Demonstrated understanding of effective graphic design and branding principles. - Experience using InDesign and Photoshop.
