SLAIT Consulting is currently seeking a Communications Engineer for a full-time position with our client in Washington, DC.
Under the direction of the Manager, Communications Systems, this individual shares responsibility for all aspects of the firm's current and future comprehensive communications infrastructure, including but not limited to hardware and software configuration, deployments, maintenance and end-user support for Tier-3 engineering issues. Candidates should have extensive knowledge of all aspects of communications systems engineering, including but not limited to Microsoft Exchange, HP/Autonomy EAS, and Microsoft Lync. The person in this position is expected to play a key role in the Communications Systems team and is expected to be well-versed in the different technologies used throughout the team.
Build, configure, and maintain highly available, resilient IT communications servers (Exchange, Lync, Email Archival, etc.).
Constantly monitor and update existing communications applications to ensure that they are running at peak performance and integrity.
Participate in the deployment and administration of the firm's Lync infrastructure.
Perform capacity planning studies and take appropriate action to ensure that the communications system can meet future growth and performance requirements.
Coordinate with other groups, both within and outside of IT, to ensure the proper and smooth interoperation between communications systems and cross-platform applications.
Check server logs on a daily basis and inform the proper parties of any necessary actions that have to be taken.
Monitor server storage, provision volumes/LUNs, and project storage growth requiremen
Create, modify, and monitor backup jobs.
Apply all necessary security patches, updates, and virus signatures.
Provide ancillary support for the firm's Blackberry system platform (BES servers).
Provide high-level user support functions for communications-related issues, escalating to the IT management team and Tier-III vendor support in case of critical issues.
Author procedural, descriptive and other types of documentation that may be required.
Communicate with vendors as may be required for installation, configuration, support, and purchasing issues.
Carry the team's on-call pager on a rotating basis, and respond to after-hours and weekend support calls.
Perform additional tasks as assigned.
College degree in Computer Science or related field preferred; experience may substitute for degree.
5 + years of experience as a full-time IT/Exchange engineer, of which at least 1 year must have been with Exchange 2010.
Experience with the implementation and administration of Microsoft Lync 2010.
Experience with message archiving solutions (e.g., EAS, Enterprise Vault, or similar).
Excellent understanding of Microsoft Active Directory Services, preferably with experience in cross-forest interoperation.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to interact with end-users to understand requirements and develop comprehensive solutions that incorporate both technology and business processes.
Experience with hardware-based e-mail security boundaries (e.g., Proofpoint, IronPort).
Experience in implementing and managing Windows Server 2008, including clustering.
Experience in server virtualization (expertise in VM ESX is a plus).
Working experience with Storage Area Networks and Network Attached Storage.
Knowledge of enterprise-class backup and replication systems (experience with NetApp will be an advantage).
Working knowledge of Local and Wide Area Networks, including DNS, firewalls, etc.
Familiarity with 3rd-party load balancers, Microsoft ISA/TMG, and SQL Server 2008 a plus.
Experience in Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity planning.
Knowledge of systems management, performance tuning, and monitoring tools.
Ability to work in a team, as well as independently, with minimal supervision to achieve work goals.
Ability to accurately follow documented procedures.
Aptitude to learn new technologies as they are incorporated into the system.
Core hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, although the Communications Engineer will be expected to work additional hours as required. Flexibility with working hours and occasional travel may also be required
