Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) seeks a Communications Specialist II for the CGIAR research program on Policies, Institutions, and Markets (PIM).

The successful candidate will coordinate efforts on communicating research undertaken within the PIM portfolio through a variety of communication channels. This position is based in Washington, DC and is an exempt, one-year, fixed-term appointment that is renewable depending on performance and funding. This position will require travel to field projects and events.

Essential Duties:
The main tasks will include but are not limited to:
Developing communication content
• Web content creation, and development, updating the website and intranet sites
• Implement social networking (Facebook, Twitter) and other web 2.0 tools to improve program visibility
• Develop research project and program summaries and reports
• Write and produce e-newsletters and assist in preparing research publications and briefs
• Assist in developing and disseminating promotional materials

Communications around events and conferences (internal and external)
• Write communication products and op-eds / blogs associated with important events
• Participate in conferences and other events and synthesize key messages and communiques
• Work with media and other communication specialists

Communication support to program managers and scientists
• Support Director and administrative staff in periodic reports to the Consortium Office and key donors
• Editing of reports and peer-reviewed publications
• Support to graphical illustration of research findings
• Prepare PowerPoint and Prezi presentations
• Collect and analyze web, social media, and other statistics to provide support for strategic decisions

Coordinate and liaison
• Work closely with communications division, participating research Centers, Programs and Partners

Knowledge Management
• Assist with knowledge management (e.g. wikis, databases)
• Coordinate with Communications and Knowledge Management to assure appropriate recording and reporting of research products generated under the PIM program

Event Planning
• Oversee smooth delivery of logistics and planning for PIM events in Washington and elsewhere

Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree in Journalism, Communications, International Development, or related field
• At least 3 years of relevant experience in communications, preferably for an international organization working in developing countries
• Ability to communicate complex research results in a concise and engaging fashion
• Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
• Demonstrated project management skills
• Ability to prioritize work and handle multiple tasks; keen attention to detail
• Conversant in social networking tools
• Ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams
• Excellent interpersonal skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in agriculture or nutrition field highly desirable
• International experience, especially in Asia or Africa
• Linkages to wider communication and action networks
• Fluency in more than one language (French, Spanish)
• Some desktop publishing software knowledge (e.g. PageMaker, InDesign)
• Good copyediting skills
