The Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods seeks a part-time (20 hours/week) communications specialist. The mission of the Prevention Research Center for Healthy Neighborhoods (PRCHN) is to foster partnerships within urban neighborhoods to develop, test, and implement effective and sustainable strategies and interventions in preventing and reducing the burden of chronic disease. This is accomplished by collaborating with neighborhood residents, leaders and community organizations in Greater Cleveland to address the significant environmental and lifestyle issues that serve as barriers to good health.
The communications specialist will assist PRCHN leadership in coordinating and preparing a range of communication materials for academic, policymaker, and community audiences of the center.The communications specialist will help to make the PRCHN’s neighborhood and community-based research accessible to a wide audience to maximize its impact on improving health.
1. Manage PRCHN website (
) which includes writing and editing center research summaries, formatting all written and photographic materials to website specifications.
2. Compile and edit PRCHN electronic newsletter, and responsible for social network (Facebook, Twitter, etc.,) information.
3. Plan, design, and manage PRCHN presence on School of Medicine and other university bulletin boards.
4. Provide technical writing for center data briefs and various other technical writing publications.
5. Coordinate center media dissemination with School of Medicine Communications Office.
1. Assist with other center communication tasks.
2. Perform other duties as assigned.
Department: Daily contact with faculty, staff, and collaborators of the PRCHN.
University: Weekly contact with collaborating investigators. Monthly contact with members of the PRCHN leadership. Regular contact with School of Medicine Communications Office.
External: Regular contact with community affiliates of PRCHN.
Students: Daily contact with PRCHN intern(s).
Supervise PRCHN intern(s).
Experience: 3 to 5 years experience with synthesizing and disseminating public health research to the academic and lay communities, with an emphasis on website design, content, and management, electronic communication outlets, and creative design.
Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree in communications, or a relevant social science, library science or public health field is required. Master’s degree is preferred.
1. Must demonstrate professional and effective verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal communication skills. Experience with technical research writing, preferably in a healthcare setting, is required.
2. Exhibit outstanding organizational and time management skills and strong work ethic. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy.
3. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a multicultural team.
4. Experience with website creation, layout, graphics, and overall content management.
5. Must have advanced working knowledge of Microsoft office and proficiency with search engines such as PubMed, Psych Info, and of bibliographic databases such as Endnote.
6. Experience using social network outlets.
