SUMMARY

Under general supervision, assists in developing communications and media materials for MPS Communications Department; disseminates information for internal and external audiences to promote MPS mission, vision and activities.

include, but are not limited to, the following

Disseminates clear, timely and accurate information to the public and school district staff; performs duties within scope of authority and training, and in compliance with MPS policies and quality standards; duties may vary according to job assignment.

·

Implements communication and public affairs strategies to promote MPS mission, vision and activities, including building support for public education, improving student learning, and strengthening internal communications to increase information and morale.

·

Composes routine correspondence, press releases and articles for publications as assigned; assists with crisis communications and mass communications projects as assigned, and writes scripts for coordinated public responses.

·

Assists in the design, development, production and distribution of public communications and promotional materials; reviews and edits memorandums, reports and other communications.

·

Conducts research projects, compiles information and summarizes findings on assigned issues.

·

Assists in the creation and production of publications, brochures, and informational materials to promote public awareness of MPS programs and services; compiles and analyzes data to support project and program goals.

·

Creates copy, content and graphics for internal and external newsletters; writes and edits stories, takes photos, assists with layout and graphics, and coordinates printing and distribution.

·

Implements program and department strategies to promote MPS mission, vision and activities.

·

Provides customer services; responds to requests for information, and provides public affairs information within scope of authority; retrieves and releases information according to MPS procedures; refers matters requiring policy interpretation to supervisor for resolution.

·

Promotes special events, MPS programs and community services; schedules and coordinates news conferences and media events, and assists public media staff as needed; maintains database and user group lists of opinion leaders and decision makers for ongoing mass communications programs.

·

Assists with updating and writing content for the internal and external websites.

·

Demonstrates courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with students, clients, visitors, and MPS staff; acts in a manner that promotes a harmonious and effective workplace environment

·

Enthusiastically promotes the Superintendent’s goals and priorities in compliance with all policies and procedures.

·

Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues, records and MPS information.

·

Other duties or tasks may be assigned on an as-needed basis

·

At times may be required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines

Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism, Mass Communications, Public Relations, or related field; AND two year’s experience in public relations programs, preferably in public sector; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.

Knowledge of:
·

Principles and practices of public relations, marketing, journalism, and public communications.

·

Applicable policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.

·

Correct English grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary.

·

Professional journalistic methods, including research, presentation and publication.

·

Computer graphic design techniques and software application packages.

·

Principles of record keeping and records management.

Skill in:
·

Preparing communications and public relations information for diverse audiences.

·

Writing, reviewing, editing and developing a variety of communications materials.

·

Developing and producing communications materials, and merging text and graphics.

·

Visualizing, configuring, shooting and editing photographs.

·

Assessing and prioritizing multiple tasks, projects and demands.

·

Operating a personal computer using standard and specialized software.

·

Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with co-workers.

·

Effective verbal and written communication.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

A valid Minnesota State Driver’s License may be required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in a standard office environment which requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. A job in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with long periods of computer work and heavy phone usage.
