Under the direction of the Project Manager or designee, the Community Resource Specialist will perform a variety of duties in support of the Conquering Diseases Community Resource Center to foster education in clinical research participation at UMass and UMass Memorial, and throughout the greater Worcester county community. The Community Resource Specialist will function as central point of contact for clinical trial information and related referrals, promoting a reliable and accessible clinical research resource.

Responsibilities:

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Responsible for the development, organization, operation and promotion of the Conquering Diseases Community Resource Center
  • Create and facilitate educational programs focusing on the importance of clinical research in the discovery of new treatments with the aim of reaching a broad cross section of the Worcester area community, utilizing multicultural, user-friendly materials and multimedia resources
  • Provide consistent, prompt responses to user inquiries by telephone, email, or in person. Respond by directly contacting user and through an interview process, to determine their information needs; triage inquiries to Project Manager as appropriate
  • Obtain Informed Consent from outpatients and healthy volunteers for the Conquering Diseases programs including the Biorepository and Research Volunteer Database
  • Guide interested members of the community on effective ways to locate quality information regarding clinical research on the Internet; facilitate referrals as appropriate to department-based clinical research activities at UMass
  • Work closely with community education and health groups to develop clinical research awareness programs that meet the cultural, social, education, and health needs of all the residents of the Worcester community
  • Develop needs assessment tools, design surveys, and develop computer programs for program evaluation
  • Consult and provide assistance and guidance on educational content, methods, techniques, and materials for a wide variety of clinical research education programs
  • Design educational materials and research instruments; analyze results and effectiveness of current education programs and materials and make any necessary improvements
  • Work closely with medical school and clinical system staff including nursing and administrative personnel to accomplish the goals of the Conquering Diseases program
  • Maintain human subjects education by completion of the CITI certification in bioethics and human subjects protection.
  • Create, maintain, and update the Conquering Diseases community focused web site
  • Recruit community volunteers for the Conquering Diseases Community Resource Center
  • Maintain statistics as required
  • Actively participate in meetings and training opportunities as required
  • Perform other duties as required

Qualifications:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelors degree in Health Sciences, Health Care Management or equivalent
  • 3 years of demonstrated experience in healthcare education, healthcare marketing or related experience
  • Strong working knowledge of all aspects of clinical trials-recruitment, informed consent process, participant and research staff expectations
  • Relevant work experience in a patient-focused clinic, hospital or other healthcare setting, with demonstrated understanding of medical record system, health setting workforce and HIPAA regulations strongly preferred
  • Ability to work cooperatively with clinical research personnel and health care providers
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Experience in using computer based tools (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Access, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Experience working with community groups in a health education role
  • Computer skills: Database, Internet searching and word processing
