Whether you’re upgrading your current bike or building up a new one, our components will take your performance to new levels. Bars and stems are built with years of research into rider ergonomics. And, our cranks have propelled riders to the podium of the Tour de France and mountain bike world championships, so they seem okay, too.

In this position you will be a key part of our Components team working with designers, product managers, test labs and factories. The Components Team works on handlebars, stems, seatposts, cranks, bbs, and chainring projects for all types of bicycles and aftermarket. Good verbal and written communication skills are very important working in our fast paced environment. You’ll be responsible for engineering projects from concept thru production. You’ll need to be able to successfully manage all aspects of a project in order to turn a concept into a production product. A successful candidate will relish new designs and concepts that make Component projects more relevant and useful for our customers.

• Engineer meaningful and innovative products that inspire cyclists & lead the industry
• Team collaboration with industrial designers, product managers, developers, graphic designers, and marketing
• Brainstorm new concepts and ideas for our products & work to gain insight for the needs of all bicycle categories
• Attend trade shows for inspiration and to stay current with trends
• International travel to vendors and factories in Asia
1. Product Engineering
a. Take responsibility for new projects from concept through production and all phases in between
b. Create engineering briefs (requirements) for your new projects with your team members
c. Create timelines for your projects and manage development of projects in order to meet these timelines
d. Create 3D models in Pro/E of our new products
e. Work with Specialized teams and manufacturers to iterate thru design reviews
f. Mechanical analysis as needed of new designs
g. Responsible for 2D drawings of all parts and assemblies
h. Work closely with our factories to get all required tooling made and functioning properly
2. Product Testing & Approval
a. Get prototypes made and into testing phases (lab testing and field testing)
b. Create test plans for all products and be responsible for making sure all products are thoroughly and completely tested in our labs
c. Iterate products thru design changes until all testing is passed in our labs. We don’t expect products to pass the 1st time thru the lab but you’ve got to make sure the final product is 100% tested and approved.
d. Make sure all documentation is complete for your projects
3. Production Readiness
a. Work with factories, manufacturing & quality engineers to get your products ready for production
b. Ensure tooling is correct and that tooling produces parts that meet our standards and tolerances
c. Conduct pilot runs as needed with factories to prove out production readiness
d. Responsible for successful 1st production start-up of your new products
4. Engineering Team Continuous Improvement
a. Work with engineering team to help improve processes and make our engineering team stronger
b. Perform other duties as required
• Ideal candidate has bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with 2+ years of experience. Outstanding recent University graduates will also be considered.
• Experience with CAD software, Pro/E is our standard at Specialized. Ability to use surfacing features in pro/e is highly desirable.
• Experience working with international cultures and vendors.
• Experience designing products utilizing a wide range of manufacturing processes.
• Experience with GD&T drawings a plus.
• Ability to work in a fast paced environment & complete tasks within product creation timelines for multiple projects simultaneously.
• Machine shop skills using lathe, mill, welder, etc.
• Avid cyclist and bike mechanic
