THE POSITIONS ARE LOCATED AT THE MARYLAND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (MDOT) OFFICE OF TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY SERVICES (OTTS) IN GLEN BURNIE, MD FOR VARIOUS WORK SHIFTS. DESCRIPTION: A Computer Operator I is the intermediate level of work operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems. The employee in this class will be responsible for monitoring the z\10 BC Mainframe computer system, running test programs and providing printed output from these jobs to the programmers. Duties also include, but are not limited to: monitoring the processing of jobs by observing the control console and correcting processing errors according to operating policies, procedures and job documentation; reading and following production schedules, job request forms and job documentation to determine what jobs to run, what procedures to follow and what input data to obtain; entering commands on the master console to open and close files as required to process specific jobs and to activate batch, backup and test jobs; loading paper and forms in (laser and impact) printers, activating printers in response to computer messages and removing printouts from printers. Work is performed in a computer room and involves exposure to moderate levels of noise and to a climate controlled environment. Employees receive moderate supervision from a Computer Operator Supervisor. The work requires careful observance of safety procedures, and lifting materials/boxes between 30-50 pounds. Employees in this classification are considered essential personnel and are required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays; and are expected to arrive at work during inclement weather.
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience: One (1) year of experience operating multipurpose, multi-tasking computer systems, six (6) months of which must have involved working in a computer mainframe environment.*

1. Experience operating computer equipment for the purpose of data entry, word processing or maintaining information may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Fifteen (15) credit hours in computer operation at an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required general experience.
