Founded in 1891, The Trustees of Reservations is a member-supported nonprofit conservation organization that preserves, for public use and enjoyment, more than 100 properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts. The Trustees seek an experienced accounting professional to join our Finance Department. This is a full-time exempt position which reports to the Director of Finance and is located in Beverly, Massachusetts.

The primary job responsibilities include supervising the accounting staff in the monthly closing process, producing financial reports, assisting with tax return preparation, and supporting the audit and budget cycles. The Controller will ensure that effective accounting systems and procedures are in place and followed to safeguard the general ledger data and ensure timely and reliable financial reporting for The Trustees and its affiliate organizations (Massachusetts Land Conservation Trust, Boston Natural Areas Network, and Hilltown Land Trust).


Oversee the monthly closing process, managing account reconciliations and analysis

Generate monthly financial reports for management on a timely basis

Prepare monthly variance reports and monitor budget performance throughout the year

Assist the Director of Finance with financial analyses, budget development and reforecasting, and preparation of Federal and state tax returns

Work with the Director of Finance in developing practices and procedures that maximize the effectiveness of the internal control systems

Coordinate with the Development and Membership departments on financial matters involving the treatment and recognition of contributions and accounting for grants and other restricted gifts

Hire, supervise and review the performance of the payroll, accounts payable and staff accounting functions

Maintain a system for monitoring and reporting on daily cash flow activities

Provide financial management training and assistance to staff on financial matters

Special projects as needed


5 to 10 years of accounting experience, CPA preferred and nonprofit experience a plus

Bachelors degree in Accounting or Finance

Excellent leadership and supervisory skills

Strong analytical and problem solving capabilities

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a customer service focus

Detail oriented and organized

Proven ability to independently prioritize work and meet deadlines

Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge a plus

Strong computer skills, experience with Microsoft Excel and Office products

Valid drivers license and willingness to travel

Requires successful completion of a CORI check
