The Role: This Life Inc ( is seeking a Corporate Controller, based in Brooklyn and reporting the CFO, to oversee all Accounting functions for HowAboutWe including General Accounting, Purchasing, A/P, Payroll, Financial Reporting, and Tax. The Corporate Controller will be tasked with implementing systems and processes to enable HowAboutWe to scale effectively. The corporate controller will be responsible for planning and evolving the company’s business model. Additionally, the Corporate Controller will be a key leader and will work closely with the CFO and Operating Managers to drive financial strategy and execution. This is a significant opportunity to contribute immediately and grow with an exciting venture backed business, work closely with an experienced CFO, the senior management team including the company founders.

  • Handle all Corporate Accounting activities including the month-end close process, financial reporting, payroll and cash management.
  • Partner with business leaders to understand and analyze financial variances vs. Plan, Forecast and Prior Year.
  • Set priorities and goals for the department. Prepare to grow the administrative functions as the business scales.
  • Establish and maintain Corporate Accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure conformance with US GAAP and other laws/regulations.
  • Implement systems in processes with to enable the Company to scale effectively and efficiently.
  • Serve as the key technical accounting resource for the Company.
  • Ensure complete and accurate tax compliance and tax accounting in conjunction with a 3rd party provider.
  • Ensure accounting systems and processes are continually streamlined via process improvement to achieve greater efficiencies and accuracy in the level, and timeliness of reporting (continuous improvements).
  • Ensure that operational and design effectiveness of internal controls are maintained.
  • Manage key COGS related to hosting and carrier expenses in close collaboration with the operating managers.
  • Build relationships cross-functionally to foster collaboration both inside and outside of Finance & Accounting team. *Prepare board materials.
  • Support the CFO and CEO on key financial decisions.
  • 5-10 years’ experience in Corporate and/or General Accounting including financial reporting experience and venture backed company experience as the Controller or Assistant Controller.
  • Big 4 Public Accounting and SEC reporting experience a plus.
  • Media, Software or SAAS experience preferred. Venture backed company experience preferred.
  • Advanced understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the ability to apply GAAP to new and existing transactions.
  • Strong people leader with the ability to build team to produce quality results in an efficient manner within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage several projects.
  • Highly proficient in QuickBooks, Excel and Keynote and a strong understanding and demonstrated use of the latest web and mobile technologies.
  • Collaborative business partner adept in building cross-functional relationships to drive business results.
  • Excellent professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
