Job Description

This attorney will be responsible for assisting senior attorneys with federal income (both individual and corporate) and all other tax aspects of annuity products in the nonqualified and IRA markets. This attorney will provide legal guidance on the tax and ERISA aspects of new or proposed annuity products. The attorney will also provide legal tax and ERISA guidance and review for all aspects of the Company’s Annuity Operations, including answers to customer questions and advice on administrative or operational errors. Technical knowledge of federal and state tax law will be required as well as the ability to apply those laws and rules in a practical manner to help our businesses meet objectives. Review of the tax and ERISA aspects of contracts and marketing materials for products and services will comprise a substantial portion of the attorney’s responsibilities. In order to successfully fulfill all of these responsibilities, it will be critical for the individual to have strong writing skills and an ability to clearly, concisely explain complex issues. Strong analytical and practical problem solving skills are also required.

Responsibilities Include:
Advise Retail Annuities (including the business units below) on matters primarily related to IRAs and nonqualified annuities to include:
Advise the Annuity Product Development and Manufacturing area on Product development (IRA and nonqualified annuities) and Tax/ERISA rules that apply to products (primarily related to IRAs and nonqualified annuities).
Advise Annuity Operations on, proper administration of our products from a tax perspective; drafting Forms and disclosures (e.g., death claim forms, re- characterization request forms, withdrawal forms, etc.); drafting Written Procedures; administrative errors and various customer other issues; and exception requests and complaints (various teams).
Advise Compliance and Consulting Services on, procedures related to the administration of our products; customer complaints; error correction and exception requests.
Advise the Marketing and Distribution area on marketing, communications and other SMRS submissions related to annuities, IRAs, and various general tax content; advanced Market (estate planning strategies) issues.
Advise Broker-Dealer Area on IRA related issue and various other tax related issues.
Advise International Tax Department on specific annuity product design and marketing issues in the over 60 jurisdictions where MetLife does business and on compliance matters for annuities and other products arising from time to time.

Job Requirements

Admission to NY Bar
3-5 years of experience working on U.S. tax and ERISA issues in the employee benefits (Annuity, Retirement and Pension Plans, Life and Disability Insurance) and/or in international tax

Preferred Requirements:
LL.M. in tax or international law is strongly preferred
Strong communication skills, both oral and written
Strong analytical skills
Ability to work independently and exercise independent judgment
