This position is located at Hyde Correctional Institution in Hyde County, NC. Effective verbal and written communication with other staff, inmates, and the general public. Be capable of defending oneself against attack by violent persons. Monitor off site programs, which may require operation of a motor vehicle in a safe and secure manner at any time of day and in varying weather and road conditions. Work under stressful conditions caused by direct contact with incarcerated offenders who can become physically violent and verbally abusive. Conduct continuous visual and audio surveillance of assigned work area. Accurately operate various office machines, prepare written reports and forms which accurately reflect information reviewed from various sources. Demonstrate and instruct inmates in the proper safe use of tools, equipment, and supplies. Review, analyze and evaluate various documents and behavioral data gathered from interviews, written documentation, and personal observation. Perform crisis interventions and routine counseling to include suicide prevention. Manage applicable and routine counseling to include times of mental and verbal abuse by inmates.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Considerable knowledge of the most recent and authoritative findings of inmate custody and rehabilitation. Some knowledge of basic human psychology, applicable to the inmate population. General knowledge of techniques of supportive counseling, interviewing, job placement and employment possibilities. General knowledge of basic psychology, sociology, and psychological testing. Ability to gather information concerning an individual’s past and experience, training, attitude, social environment and mental capabilities. Considerable knowledge of departmental rules, policies and procedures concerning the custody, care, treatment, and training of inmates. Considerable knowledge of the principles of administration involved in operating a state correction facility. General knowledge of community resources. Ability to organize and supervise the activities of a group of inmates. Ability to establish and maintain an effective relationship with inmates, inmates’ relatives, professional, and para-professional personnel. Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Ability to think clearly and act quickly and effectively during emergencies.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Completion of a two year associate degree program in criminal justice, human services, recreation or a related field; or graduation from high school and two years of custody experience within the NC DOC or two years of human services experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications: must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Training and Standards Council.
