This position is located in Alexander County, NC at Alexander Correctional Institution. The primary purpose of this position is to supervise inmates assigned to Food Service in the preparation and service of regular and therapeutic diets for the inmate population assigned to Alexander Correctional Institution. This position will provide overall supervision of inmate workers assigned to the Food Service area on either of two shifts involved in preparation and distribution of meals. This position will ensure that inmates are properly trained and prepared to fulfill their daily responsibilities. Continuously observes and patrols food service work area, performs crisis intervention counseling, conducts inmate counts, secures and maintains equipment, observes sanitary preparation of food for a 1,274-inmate facility; inventories and rotates stock.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Knowledge essential to perform this position are considerable knowledge of inmate custody and program management. Must have some knowledge of basic human psychology, departmental rules and policies. Must also have knowledge of procedures concerning custody, care, treatment, and training of inmates. Considerable knowledge of the principles of administration involved in operating a State Correctional facility is required. Knowledge of food preparation; knowledge of general measures to be used and maintain sanitary conditions in food service. A general knowledge of community resources is helpful. Ability to provide leadership and supervisory skills necessary to organize and supervise the activities of the Food Service operation is essential. The ability to establish professional relationships with staff, inmates, and the general public is required. The employee must possess the ability to express ideas clearly and concisely in both oral and written form. An ability to think clearly and act quickly and effectively during emergencies is required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High school or General Educational Development diploma and one year of experience in institutional food preparation and food services; in management of a commercial food service operation; as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements for Correctional Food Service Officer Trainee Appointment - High school or General Educational Development diploma. Necessary Special Qualification - Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Council.
