Provides professional services related to diagnosis and treatment of inmate patients and employees injured as a result of TDCJ -ID activities. Renders medical judgment regarding care provided to inmates assigned to the unit. Works under general direction of the Unit Medical Director, with wide latitude to exercise initiative and independent judgment. Directly supervises 2 to 4 Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioners in the unit health services. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; sit; and use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Work will be performed in a correctional institution with contact with inmates. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
•Examines inmate/patients to determine general health and prescribes treatment and administers medication as needed.
•Inspects, completes, and analyzes records, assigns, reviews and updates classification, completes admission notes, progress notes, and discharge summaries and makes rounds on patients admitted.
•Refers patients to medical specialist or other practitioner for specialized treatment.
•Reviews charts and monitors care provided by physician extenders on site and at outlying units as assigned.
•Takes regional call with other providers to provide 24 hour coverage.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Must hold a current license to practice medicine by the Texas State Board of Medical Examiners. Must hold current Drug Enforcement Agency and Texas Department of Public Safety controlled substances registration certificates. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
