This position performs a wide variety of duties connected with maintaining the security of the jail.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
The employee in this class serves primarily as a corrections officer. The Corrections Officer is assigned to work at the direction of the supervisor in providing for the safety and security of the inmates.
Examples of Duties:
Properly maintains the jail complex; makes security checks as necessary;
Reports to the Jail Administrator or Shift Supervisor on duty all actions of misconduct of prisoners or other personnel; reports all notable prisoner grievances;
Monitors the activities of Huber Law prisoners;
Receives and supervises prisoner work details in the jail;
Receives, photographs, and fingerprints new prisoners; safeguards prisoner's valuables; attends to prisoner needs;
Books and releases prisoners;
Maintains criminal record files;
Logs and admits visitors;
Serves meals and retrieves trays;
As directed by the supervisor, prepares reports, receives and issues fines and bonds;
Answers the department phone and deals with inquiries from the public;
Secures surrounding areas, when so assigned;
Provides for secure transportation of prisoners and jailed persons for court appearances and related needs;
Assists with the logging of court dispositions;
Assists with first appearances in court;
Supervises work details as assigned;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge of Wisconsin Statutes relating to the care and commitment of prisoners; working knowledge of the methods and practices of jail housekeeping; good knowledge of institutional management practices and philosophies including the care
and custody of prisoners; ability to handle and control potentially volatile situations; ability to maintain effective relationships with inmates and the general public and fellow employees; ability to keep records and maintain reports; knowledge of
practices and procedures to provide for the securing of an area; general knowledge of crowd control; good communications skills; ability to remain calm in emergency situations; ability to effectively use weapons of force, if necessary; dependability;
excellent physical condition. Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
Associates Degree in: a Wisconsin vocational or technical education district or its accredited equivalent from another state or a minimum of 60 fully accredited college level credits, or jail-certified in the state of Wisconsin.
Special Requirements & Certifications:
Jailer Certification in the State of Wisconsin; Certified Law Enforcement Officer preferred.
