Corrections Officers are responsible for the control, observation and supervision of inmates to ensure the maintenance of security, operational rules and policies of the Sherburne County Jail.

Examples of Typical Duties & Responsibilities:

These examples of typical duties do not include all possible tasks for this classification and do not limit the assignment of related tasks. Regular attendance according to the department's approved work schedule is required for all Sherburne County positions.

Conduct inmate security checks, conduct searches of inmates and building areas; explain inmate rules and maintain discipline; deliver inmate meals; refer sick or injured inmates to medical staff; secure inmate property; release inmates as appropriate; conduct head counts and supervise access; mitigate problems or disagreements between inmates; complete required forms and reports; assist with video visitation for inmates; occasional transportation of inmates; perform booking procedure when inmates arrive; other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a high school diploma or equivalent and valid Minnesota Driver's license. Prior training or experience in corrections is desirable, but not required. Must have excellent verbal communication skills, ability to hear normal range of radio and speech, and ability to visually observe persons and conditions. Must have ability to work independently, maintain a calm and professional manner at all times, and have the ability to physically restrain inmates if necessary.

Work Eligibility:
Must be eligible to work in the United States. Any offer of employment will be contingent on successful completion of a mandatory written test, physical agility test, interview, pre-employment physical examination, psychological screening, and a background investigation.

Work Schedule: Six days on 3 off. Corrections Officers may work 1st, 2nd, or 3rd shift bid by seniority.


This position starts firm at $17.87 per hour .

We appreciate your interest in employment with Sherburne County. These instructions will explain how to proceed with the application and testing process to be considered for the Corrections Officer eligibility list. Please read these instructions carefully.

A mandatory written test will be given on Wednesday, July 17th or Thursday, July 18th. Please select the time you plan to attend the written test in the supplemental questions area on your application. Once a test session is full it will be removed from the selections.

Report to the Emergency Operations Center at the Sherburne County Government Center to take the mandatory test on the day and time you selected. Enter through the Sheriff's Department entrance (Door G). The test will take approximately two and a half hours.

The test session will begin promptly at the time indicated. Plan to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the test time to check in at the Emergency Operations Center, Sherburne County Government Center, 13880 Business Center Drive, Elk River MN 55330.

- A photo Id card (MN Driver's License or other acceptable photo ID). Applicants without acceptable photo identification will not be eligible to take the test6.
-If you are claiming veterans' preference, a copy of your DD214 must be attached to your application, turned in before or at the time of testing in order to receive the preference points.
Two pencils, sharpened.


Applicants who score 80% or better on each portion of the Corrections Officer test will have their applications reviewed. If your application is reviewed and accepted, you will be notified of the physical agility test time. If you pass the agility test requirements set below and are chosen to continue with the selection process you will be required to complete the following additional steps. Failure to successfully complete a step will disqualify your application and end the hiring process.
