Community Mediation Services, Inc. (CMS), a not-for-profit agency based in Jamaica, Queens, is pleased to announce that the School Based Department is currently interviewing for a T emporary Counselor (April-June2013) to support and provide services to at-risk high school youth in Ridgewood Queens. Created in 1983, our mission is to promote collaborative problem solving for youth, their families, individuals, institutions and organizations within a diverse community.

Through direct service and case management, the Youth Counselor will provide attendance improvement and academic support to a targeted population of at-risk students in the school. Reporting to the Director, staff will work in collaboration with Senior Counselor and school administration to implement and provide services, and regularly assess the program and its needs. The scope of these responsibilities includes, but is not limited to:
  • Provide intensive individual and group counseling services for students
  • Develop long and short term goals for students and periodic review of goals for progress
  • Maintain accurate and up to date case management records and logs in compliance with department and funding requirements
  • Service a case load of 30-40 active cases, conducting intakes, assessments and referrals to partner agencies and internal services
  • Communicate regularly with students and families through phone contact, written correspondence, appointments and home visits
  • Monitor all program services to ensure that quality services are being provided, follow-up is complete and outcomes are recorded in the ETO (Efforts to Outcomes) database
  • Provide quantitative and qualitative outcomes achieved by the program and youth served in the form of case notes, program and statistical reports as needed
Additional Qualifications:

- MSW or Master's Degree in Social Sciences only
- 2-4 years of Youth Development experience preferred
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Strong communication (oral and written) skills. Highly organized
- Must be flexible, self-motivated and goal-oriented
- Willingness to work some evening and weekend hours is necessary
