Provides individual and group educational, career, personal/social and crisis counseling to students in diverse higher education settings; teaches counseling courses; develops and facilitates workshops and other student retention activities; provides consultation for faculty, administration and staff; participates in other professional duties such as division, campus and or district committees and commencement activities. Utilizes community resources and collaborates with campus faculty, student services departments, staff and administrators.

Essential Functions

40% - Provides individual and group educational, career, personal/social, and crisis counseling; teaches/facilitates counseling courses and/or workshops such as academic survival skills, career development and life management skills; develops and participates in other student retention activities. Provides professional counseling to individual students in the areas of educational planning, career development, personal growth and test administration/interpretation
30% - Facilitates/teaches credit and non-credit courses in Counseling and Personal Development (CPD); develops course syllabi/outlines for courses and teaches all assigned classes/groups
10% - Provides advisement to students and potential students; includes College Kick-off, New student orientations
10% - Participates/directs special projects, consult with faculty, provide direct training for faculty/ students
10% - Participates in other professional duties as part of a faculty member's responsibilities. This may include, but not limited to: committee meetings and assignments, professional development, workshops/presentations and commencement activities, as well as collaborating with community to provide workshops/orientations/trainings in diverse topics

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree with an emphasis in guidance/counseling from an accredited college or university and have completed at least twenty-four (24) semester or 36 quarter hours of graduate work including the following:
1. Counseling Theory and Techniques
2. Personality Theories or Development
3. Testing Theories and Applications
4. Group Counseling Theories and Techniques
5. Career Counseling Theories and Resources
6. Individual Assessment (a course that teaches how to prepare and individual assessment or appraisal from test data, transcripts, and other educational and personal data)
7. Must have completed either a Practicum, supervised Practice, or Internship in Counseling
(Applicants for counseling positions are strongly encouraged to include course descriptions from the university's catalog for the aforementioned seven courses. A counselor may be hired if he/she has completed course work in at least five (5) of the first (6) above areas and has the required twenty-four (24) semester or thirty-six (36) quarter hours of graduate work. If the counselor is deficient in an area 1 through 6, the deficiency shall be removed within one year of the date of hire. Area seven (7) must be completed before the date of hire)
  • EDU250 - Teaching and Learning in the Community College or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire
Desired Qualifications

  • Experience performing counseling functions with diverse populations in a community college counseling center or similar environment
  • Experience intervening with mental health crisis to assess issues and facilitate community referrals
  • Experience designing and implementing effective programs to improve student success and retention
  • Experience teaching college courses using methods such as Internet-enhanced instruction, specifically hybrid and online, active learning, and/or learning communities
  • Experience teaching Counseling and Personal Development courses such as CPD 150-Strategies for College Success and CPD 102AB-Career Exploration, CPD 102AH-Stress Management
  • Experience evaluating counseling services and assessing student learning outcomes
  • Experience with underprepared, first generation, veterans, athletes and students with disabilities
Special Working Conditions

This position will require working occasional evenings and Saturdays.
