Candidate must have a State of Texas License for court interpretation by the Texas Commission on Licensing and Regulation in accordance with Texas Government Code, Title 2, Subtitle D, Section 1, Chapter 57, Subchapter C, by time of appointment.
The general purpose of this position is to provide consecutive, literal interpretation of testimony between English and Spanish at municipal judicial proceedings under general supervision. The primary function to be performed is to ensure grammatical and idiomatic accuracy in both languages in order that questions and answers about facts at issue, and statements and explanations of legal terms used in determining the disposition of cases are clearly understood by defendants and witnesses who can hear but are not able to comprehend or communicate in English.
R esearch dictionaries and other literature to develop case related vocabularies including: emergency protective and protective custody orders, Class “C” misdemeanors such as traffic and City ordinance violations, civil parking violations, driver’s license suspension, vehicle for hire hearings and show cause, indigency and right of possession hearings. Establish and maintain rapport with Municipal Court Clerk, judges, attorneys, law enforcement officers, and Court personnel, as well as with witnesses and defendants who may be fearful or uncooperative to effectively obtain and furnish legally required information during arraignments, bench and jury trails, prosecution hearings, “in chambers” meetings, and other interviews as assigned. Ascertain level of reasoning and understanding of questions by persons testifying, and select suitable words or phrases in their language to elicit answers that can be completely and logically expressed in English in compliance with the intent of their cross examination and the court’s instructions. Orally or in writing translate court an departmental documents such as trial or hearing minutes, charging instruments, plea declarations, waivers, cash bond forfeiture forms, deferred adjudication orders, magisterial warnings and press releases, as directed.
