The Data Center L2 Mechanical Technician is responsible
for the operational integrity and regulatory compliance
of the mechanical, chill water, HVAC and the processes
that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective
way. Technicians must ensure that data center problems
are identified and repaired quickly, that contractors
deliver quality services, and that internal customer
demands are met. A L2 technician develops creative
approaches to keep operational costs to a minimum,
improve efficiency, and implement new strategies.
Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal
conditions in facilities systems. Areas include:
Mechanical, Electrical, Building Monitoring and Control
(monitor alarms and activity)
Provides guidance and assistance to Mechanical Team in
day to day tasking.
Provide feedback to CF Engineering on the
effectiveness of existing standards and processes
Works with contractors, consultants and quality
assurance for all system expansions, corrections and
upgrades
Work with the CFO Supervisor to develop and track
annual budgets
Work with the CFO Supervisor to track and complete an
aggressive preventive and predicative maintenance
schedule
Ensure data center operates at maximum operational
efficiency, including analyzing existing operating
conditions, recommending new technologies and improving
overall efficiency and cost reduction. Ideal candidate
will have a demonstrated technical ability and
innovative thinking cross functionally, including
integrated systems and IT
On-call to respond to emergency situations at the data
center
Ensure data center operates at maximum operational
efficiency
Manage systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting
outages
Work with CFO Supervisor to determine maintenance
requirements for mechanical systems
Manage data floor and back of house mechanical loading
and capacity, including ensuring that the cooling system
is operating at its highest efficiency
Assist the Lead Technician and Data Center Manager in
day-to-day operations
Provide applied mechanical, integrated control and water
chemistry technical expertise for the entire data
center.
Job Requirements:
Understanding of the mechanical systems and basic
understanding of electrical systems used in a data
center environment, including: Feeders, Transformers,
Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS units, PDU
units, Chillers, Air handling units and CRAC units.
Current knowledge of Fire and Life Safety and building
codes
Knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25 and
compliance issues
Current knowledge in industrial safety best practices
(i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and
state regulations)
Familiarity with data trending / tracking and analysis
and ability to rapidly learn and use PC based,
integrated critical monitoring systems
Hands-on experience installing, maintaining and
troubleshooting large commercial and industrial
mechanical systems including:
Large Centrifugal Chillers
Cooling Towers
Water Treatment Systems
HVAC equipment
Computer Room AC Units (CRACs)
Operating Building Management and Industrial PLC
Control Systems
Emergency Standby Diesel Generator Systems
Fuel/Oil systems, Fuel/Oil Day tanks and
Fuel/Oil Storage Tanks
Knowledge of NFPA 25, sprinkler and dry-stand
pipe systems
Chilled/Condenser Water Pump
Well Pump
VFD Drives
Closed loop chilled/condenser water systems
Heat Exchangers
Humidifiers
Water heaters
Water/Air filters
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
Proficient with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Project)
Ability to communicate effectively with customers and
internal staff.
Ability to coordinate, supervise and communicate with
contractors who perform maintenance or upgrade work on
these systems.
Ability to learn quickly and address issues as they
arise during normal working hours or when on call.
Ability to operate in and promote a rigorous
process-driven, team environment
Ability to logically analyze and solve problems
Operate Hand and Machine Tools (hammer, drill, saw,
etc.)
Operate a forklift
Associate degree in Mechanical Technology /
Engineering Area required
5 or more years in a critical mechanical/HVAC
position.
5 or more years at journeyman or senior technician
level, or the equivalent in a critical environment
(preference given to data center, hospital, or power
plant experience, including nuclear power generation).
Journey level Mechanic, Millwright, or Operating
Engineer
Ability to lift heavy equipment, up to 50 lbs
Full use of sight, hearing and voice are required as
well as full motor skills
Typical data center work environment with varying
temperatures and loud noises
Extensive daily usage of a computer or workstation.
(MS Office Suite)
Work on site
Must be comfortable working in a high stress, fast
paced environment shifting priorities
Must be willing to work outside normal business hours,
including weekends, late nights, holidays and on-call
support.
Must be able to respond to emergency situations at the
data center.
Assigned a company cell phone for availability during
assigned shift and emergency situations.
CPR/First Aid Certified/Forklift certified or ability
to obtain durning employment.
