MapR delivers on the promise of Hadoop with a proven, enterprise-grade platform that supports a broad set of mission-critical and real-time production uses. MapR brings unprecedented dependability, ease-of-use and world-record speed to Hadoop, NoSQL, database and streaming applications in one unified Big Data platform. MapR is used across financial services, retail, media, healthcare, manufacturing, telecommunications and government organizations as well as by leading Fortune 100 and Web 2.0 companies. Amazon, Cisco, EMC and Google are part of MapR’s broad partner ecosystem. Investors include Lightspeed Venture Partners, Mayfield Fund, NEA, and Redpoint Ventures.

As the Hadoop market grows, so grows our responsibility to train proficient Hadoop application developers. As a MapR Curriculum Developer, you will create training material for both in-class and online courses with one primary goal: Help Hadoop users learn to do their jobs. You care about how people learn, and you have a passion for creating effective learning environments.
This role focuses on Hadoop application developers, so you must have a developer’s mindset and proficiency in Java programming. Creating compilable code examples is a must. You will be expected to self-manage your projects, to take marching orders and come back with professional results: Well-organized, well-reviewed courseware that causes students to think, “this helps me do my job!” You will work across team boundaries, and not hesitate to call meetings with Product Managers, Development Engineers, QA, Sales, or whoever has the information you need.

The charter for this position is to create and maintain training content that will be handed off to field trainers through “train the trainer” events. PowerPoint, Eclipse, MS Word, and O’Reilly books will be your constant companions. Your day-to-day activity will not be customer-facing delivery, but you must be able to stand and deliver your courseware to MapR’s training partners. Along the way, you will help explore and develop other channels for training, such as on-line courses, video tutorials, etc.

Other responsibilities include:
  • Design, develop and maintain training curriculum for Hadoop application developers. This includes updating and evolving curriculum over time.
  • Design and develop lab exercises to give students hands-on experience.
  • Support field trainers to ensure flawless delivery of your courseware to students.
  • Self-manage your projects with high organization, keeping your team abreast of status.
  • Concurrently think like a developer and a trainer. Every time a student thinks, “This is useful and fun!” and a trainer thinks, “I know exactly how to teach this course.”
  • Develop strong working relationships with subject matter experts (inside or outside the company) to validate course design and content.
  • Train trainers. Deliver beta courses as part of honing a course. You may occasionally co-teach a class with a new training partner as they ramp-up.

This position requires the following capabilities:
  • Java programming experience
  • Experience developing slides and/or written documentation for educational purposes
  • Experience writing clear step-by-step instructions to accomplish a well-defined objective
  • Demonstrated proficiency leading a training session
  • Project management skills, including crystal-clear communication to keep your team appraised of status and to get help when you need it
  • B.S. in Computer Science or relevant experience highly preferred
Bonus points for experience with:
  • Hadoop, MapReduce and/or big data analytics
  • Setting up projects in Eclipse IDE and building with Maven
  • Using or supporting open source projects, such as Apache
  • Creating online training, video tutorials or other web 2.0 media – wow us with samples!
  • Creating certification exams
MapR is an equal opportunity employer.
