High school diploma or equivalent combination of training and experience. Three years of training and/or experience. Must be CPR certified. Requires a thorough knowledge of instruments, materials and distinct dental procedures used in a wide variety of related general dentistry procedure to make preparations for and provide chairside assistance.
Must have a basic knowledge of dental terminology.
Must have manual and technical skill to assist the student dentist and faculty and skill and dexterity in mixing and handling a wide variety of materials and instruments. Must possess strong verbal communicative skills to provide information, comfort and reassurance to motivate the patient.
Must be able to tolerate long periods of bending, standing and walking. Must be highly motivated, possess strong organizational skills, a high level of personal and professional maturity, integrity and honesty in dealing with faculty, students, staff and patients and in carrying out responsibilities. Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others. Ability to perform all tasks and job responsibilities safely without injury to self and others in compliance with A&M System and HSC guidelines.
Preferred Education and Experience:
5 or more years in a lead dental assisting position to include training in 4 handed dentistry. Must be able to demonstrate adequate work history. TSBDE certification in radiology, infection control, and Jurisprudence (Registered Dental Assistant through the State of Texas). Bilingual (Spanish).
Provides direct chairside assistance to D3 students during the examination and treatment of patients. Four handed dentistry procedures are utilized, and suction and retraction needs are anticipated and performed without interfering with the vision or access of the student.
Performs indirect patient care procedures to include preparing the patient and treatment room for the specific type of appointment. Responds to student and patient inquiries regarding clinical policies and dental procedures not requiring the advice of a dentist.
Utilizes dental materials and instruments for procedures and insure the setups are appropriate for the dental procedure performed. Prepare, mix and assist in the use of the various materials, following manufacturer guidelines or the instructions of the dentist.
Maintains material inventory levels and packages clinical supplies for unit dispensing.
Disinfect water lines of D3, D4, Dental Hygiene and DAU dental units in the 3rd floor clinic on monthly basis. Water bottle disinfectant maintenance on a weekly basis.
Performs disinfection/sterilization of the operatory, operatory instruments and equipment according to OSHA and local policy and procedure. Utilizes recommended infection control procedures at all times.
Provides proper equipment and facility security, maintenance and cleanliness. Insure that the DAU facilities are neat, clean and always present a professional appearance; equipment is clean and in operable condition and is properly secured when unattended; OSHA , Hazard Communication Program and local guidelines are enforced at all times.
Maintains current CPR certification and knowledge of local emergency procedures.
Performs any and all related duties required or assigned tasks.
