This is highly responsible managerial, administrative, and professional work of unusual difficulty in assisting the Departmental Director in directing, appraising, analyzing, and coordinating all operations of the Department.

The employee in this class is responsible for planning, organizing, directing and coordinating functions of a diverse and multifaceted department, handling a wide variety of special projects and assignments of high complexity and importance, and monitoring and overseeing projects to ensure satisfactory and timely completion. The employee relieves the Department Director of much operational detail in the functioning of the department and serves as Acting Director in the Director’s absence. The employee exercises considerable initiative and independent judgment in determining work priorities, scheduling and assigning work and establishing goals and objectives, subject to the direction of the department head. Work is reviewed in conferences with the employee and through reports submitted.

NOTE: This is a Non-Classified position.


1. Have successfully graduated from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Parks and/or Recreation Administration, Education, Landscape Architecture, or closely related field. A Master’s degree in an appropriate field is preferred.

2. Have at least seven (7) years of progressively responsible managerial, supervisory and professional work experience in the design, development, management and maintenance of parks and related facilities and/or recreational programming, at least three (3) years of which must have involved directing subordinate professional and/or supervisory personnel and policy making authority over assigned functional area(s) in parks and/or recreation.

3. Preference will be given for certification with state and national organizations as a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional.
