The Zoning Administration Division is seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Deputy Zoning Administrator in the Ordinance Administration Branch. Has direct supervisory oversight of planning staff that draft amendments to the Zoning Ordinance. Prepares written responses to Zoning Ordinance interpretation requests, and conducts zoning review of public use determinations, including telecommunication facilities. Serves as a working manager who not only delegates work assignments, monitors work progress, and reviews and edits work products of staff for accuracy and consistency with Zoning Ordinance provisions and interpretations, but also is responsible for his/her own work assignments. Assists the Division Director with other activities, such as the preparation and maintenance of the Zoning Ordinance Work Program and standard operating procedures, selection of personnel, and the development and conduct of training courses. May assist the Division Director in the overall administration and management of the division work program. Performs other duties as assigned.
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a planning-related field; plus five years of experience in a planning-related field (preferably in the specific area of assignment). A master's degree may be substituted for one year of the required experience. The years of experience should include a minimum of three years of experience in the specific area of assignment, e.g., zoning evaluation, zoning administration, zoning enforcement, or land use planning.

Strong abilities in written and oral communications. Professional and/or supervisory experience in the planning, zoning and site plan review fields, to include writing Zoning Ordinance amendments along with implementing, interpreting and enforcing the Zoning Ordinance. Understanding of Virginia planning and zoning-enabling legislation. Master's degree in planning or a closely related field and/or AICP Certification.
This position requires attendance at occasional evening meetings.
